Hawaii bankruptcy filings unchanged at 185 in June

There were 185 bankruptcy cases filed in Hawaii in June, unchanged from the same month a year ago, U.S. Bankruptcy Court reported today.

Through the first six months of 2013 bankruptcy cases were running 17 percent behind the same period in 2012, according to the report.

The biggest increase in cases was on Maui, where there were 48 filings in June, up 60 percent from June 2012. Filings fell to 106 from 117 on Oahu (down 9 percent), to 14 from 28 in Hawaii County (down 14 percent) and to seven from 10 in Kauai County (down 30 percent).

The bulk of the filings in June — 138 cases — were filed under Chapter 7 of the federal bankruptcy code, which calls for liquidation of a debtor’s assets.
