Honolulu police reopened Ward Avenue and Hawaiian Electric crews restored power to 4,000 customers after a utility pole fell on Lunalilo Street Thursday night.

Utility crews were still working on Lunalilo Street Friday afternoon. Ward Avenue reopened at about 1 p.m., Honolulu police said.

Police closed Ward Avenue in both direction from Kinalau Place to Green Streets and Lunalilo Street is closed between Victoria and Emerson streets after the pole fell and as repairs continued overnight into the morning.

The power pole fell at about 9:15 p.m., just after the fireworks show at Ala Moana and as thousands of people were returning home.

A Hawaiian Electric Co. spokeswoman said about 4,000 customers initially lost power. Service was restored to about 1,600 customers within 30 minutes and by 10:30 p.m. about 2,400 customers remained without electricity.

A spokeswoman said electricity for all customers was restored by 6 a.m.

After Hawaiian Electric Co. crews finished replacing the pole and restoring its service, other utility crews continued to work at the scene.

The pole did not fall because of a car accident, police and Hawaiian Electric Co. said. The utility is investigating the cause of the outage.
