Wahine basketball team notches win at UCSB

The Hawaii women’s basketball team notched its first victory on its four-game road trip with a 63-60 win at UC Santa Barbara tonight.

UH (11-9, 5-3 Big West) trailed the Gauchos for much of the second half, but senior forward Kamilah Jackson stuck consecutive layups to give the Rainbow Wahine a 57-56 lead with 2:31 to play. She and senior wing Shawna Kuehu went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final minute to ice the victory, which came after narrow road losses at Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge last week.

The Wahine opted to take a foul up three with one second left, preventing a tying 3-point shot by UCSB (6-15, 1-7). The Gauchos missed the free throw intentionally and Destiny King collected the rebound as time expired.

UH completes its road trip at first-place Cal Poly (13-8, 7-1) in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Saturday.
