Isles’ Republicans prepare for presidential caucus

Kevin Dayton

Hawaii Republicans will gather at 44 sites Tuesday to cast ballots to decide how many of the state’s 19 delegates will be awarded to each of the remaining GOP presidential candidates. Voting begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m.

The caucus voting is open only to registered voters who are party members, but party officials will be equipped to register people to vote on the spot and to help them to sign Republican Party cards to become official members. Participants must bring photo identification, organizers said.

In 2012, about 10,000 people came out for the Hawaii Republican presidential caucus, but the turnout this year is anyone’s guess. One organizer estimated that 10,000 will show, but the party has printed 30,000 ballots to be sure everyone gets one.

Actual turnout likely will hinge on the local popularity of billionaire Donald Trump, who dominated most of the Super Tuesday voting last week. A Hawaii Poll earlier this year suggested Trump is easily the most popular of the GOP candidates in the race.

Four of the six Republican candidates who qualified to compete in the caucus voting in Hawaii are still active. They are Trump, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson also qualified for the Hawaii caucuses, but both have dropped out of the national race.

State Sen. Sam Slom, a longtime Hawaii Republican, had been a Carson backer, but announced Friday he was shifting his support to Cruz after Carson’s withdrawal.

One response to “Isles’ Republicans prepare for presidential caucus”

  1. droid says:

I’m an independent. Yet I am tempted to participate in this caucus just to ensure Donald Trump and Ted Cruz get one less vote. Too bad the caucus cards the GOP sent out indicate you must “sign a Republican Party membership card” in order to cast your vote. My best guess is, Hawai’i will have a healthy turnout anyway. In that respect, the GOP did their job by keeping the race interesting.
