Clinton team: Comey should say whether he’s reviewed emails

FBI Director James Comey prepares to testify on Capitol Hill in Washington. Comey’s announcement that his bureau was reviewing new emails possibly relevant to Hillary Clinton’s private email server investigation has thrust him into the public spotlight again just days before Election Day.

WASHINGTON >> Hillary Clinton’s campaign on Sunday pressured FBI Director James Comey to release more details about the emails he says could be related to the investigation into her use of a private email server, including whether Comey had even reviewed them himself.

Tim Kaine, Clinton’s running mate, said Comey owed it to the public to be more forthcoming about the emails under review by the FBI with only 10 days remaining before Nov. 8 election. Kaine’s message aimed to counter Republican rival Donald Trump, who has seized on the reignited email controversy in hopes of sewing fresh doubts about Clinton’s trustworthiness.

“As far as we know now, Director Comey knows nothing about the content of these emails. We don’t know whether they’re to or from Hillary at all,” Kaine said. The Virginia senator said if Comey “hasn’t seen the emails, I mean they need to make that completely plain. Then they should work to see the emails and release the circumstances of those once they have done that analysis.”

Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, said Comey’s handling of the matter was “inappropriate.” Podesta urged Comey to be more transparent because the disclosure came “in the middle of the presidential campaign so close to the voting.”

Comey’s actions Friday roiled the White House race, energizing Trump as polls had showed him sliding and unnerving Democrats worried about the presidency and down-ballot congressional races.

The FBI is looking into whether there was classified information on a device belonging to Anthony Weiner, the disgraced ex-congressman who is separated from longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Comey, in a letter to Congress on Friday, said the FBI had recently come upon new emails while pursuing an unrelated case and was reviewing whether they were classified.

Clinton’s team tried to make it cases on the Sunday news shows, joining Democratic leaders who have said it was “unprecedented” for such FBI action so close to an election.

Her campaign has called on Comey to release all the facts known so far, and they have criticized his letter because, they contend, it lacks crucial details.

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Comey was in “an impossible spot” when he acknowledged the FBI was looking into the messages. “Had he sat on the information, one can argue that he also would be interfering in the election,” by failing to disclose the review, Conway said.

Clinton said in Florida on Saturday that it was “pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election” and accused Trump of using the issue to mislead voters in the final leg of the campaign.

Trump told a crowd in Golden, Colorado, on Saturday that the FBI’s review of Clinton email practices raises “everybody’s deepest hope that justice, as last, can be properly delivered.” His crowd cheered Clinton’s email woes, which Trump has taken to calling the biggest political scandal since Watergate.

The controversy over Clinton’s email practices while she served as secretary of State has dogged her for more than a year.

Late Saturday, four senior Democratic senators urged the Justice Department and the FBI to provide more detailed information by Monday about what investigative steps are being taken, the number of emails involved and what is being done to determine how many of the emails are duplicative of those already reviewed by the FBI.

The letter went to Comey and Attorney General Loretta Lynch from Sens. Ben Cardin of Maryland, Tom Carper of Delaware, Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Dianne Feinstein of California.

Comey spoke Saturday with the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Judiciary Committee, said Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va.

Goodlatte said he and Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., encouraged Comey to make as much information as possible public before the election. He said the FBI chief “did not give us any response in terms of what more he could say.”

Goodlatte said he also asked Comey about the status of the request from the House Republicans on the referral “of potential impeachment — I’m sorry — potential perjury charges to be brought with regard to Ms. Clinton and he deferred to the Justice Department itself. He did not answer that question as well.”

The slip about impeachment reflected the GOP promise, if Clinton is elected, to doggedly investigate her.

A government official told The Associated Press on Saturday that the Justice Department had advised the FBI against telling Congress about the new developments in the Clinton investigation because of the potential fallout so close to the election. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter and discussed it on condition of anonymity.

Justice officials concluded the letter would be inconsistent with department policy that directs against investigative actions that could be seen as affecting an election or helping a particular candidate, the official said.

Kaine and Goodlatte appeared on ABC’s “This Week,” Podesta and Conway were on CNN’s “State of the Union”

Cnn article reports, The FBI and Justice Dept. are talking with Huma’s lawyers. The FBI and Justice Dept. don’t have legal access to all the new emails found on the laptop! And you hear/read Hillary chastising the FBI, what a Crooked Lying Hillary joke of a job of deception to the General Public! LIES and DECEPTION

      • Pocho says:

If the FBI/Comey caves into the Justice Dept. Lynch I wouldn’t know what to tell you but of TheDonald’s telling the truth of a fixed Election. They the Politicians serving taxpayers are “all” smooth talking CRooks! I have no faith in these talking Heads supposedly serving taxpayers

        • Boots says:

First of all it all depends upon what you mean by a Fixed election. Republicans have always tried to fix elections by restricting voting. Main reason I vote democratic as I want my vote to count for freedom.

        • Pocho says:

It’s the same deception game Hillary going to the Podium and stating the FBI gave the letter to the GOP, meaning top Democrats not receiving it. She had to retract that statement of a LIE! saying she didn’t read the 2nd page! Deception and having to recant that getting caught in the act! Hillary’s a lawyer! and she tries to take the public as FOOLS? Lying deceiving Hillary

        • bumbai says:

Boots’ idea of “freedom” is the freedom for illegal aliens and dead people to vote for Hillary.

        • Pocho says:

Fox’s Chris Wallace grilled Dem. Chairman on the Fib Clinton told in a news conference that the FBI only gave the letters to the Rep.’s. John Podesta also stated that contrived Lie! stating only the Rep.’s go the letter. Golly, Podesta already had that letter in hand 3 hours or so before Hillary came up to the podium. Podesta not a Democrat now? lol, lying crooked Democratic Cheats! But, their M.O. was done as Crooked Lying Hillary told the whole world watching that only the Rep.’s got the letter. And later only thru press release that she didn’t read the 2nd page of the letter that addressed Dem.’s. Podesta is a liar

      • allie says:

Comey is totally useless. FBI is worthless. They failed to protect us on 9-11 and still cannot do the job.

        • kailua000 says:

He was a democratic hero just a few days ago and Zero to the republicans. Now its turned around and Democrats are crying foul. Hillary is no longer a government offical, she cant “call” on the government do to anything its not her right. And the FBI should not release anything until they truly investigate it. Dont get me wrong, I cant stand Trump either, but anyone who thinks Hillary is a saint is a very very sad individual. Garbage spills out of Trumps mouth and we see it. Hillary does it behind closed doors. Why is not okay what Comey has done but the Democrats keep defending Lynch on her “grandkids and golf” discussion on a private jet, alone so they could not be heard as okay? I dont know, maybe Comey is just trying to do whats right, while Lynch takes the 5th. While Hillary cant remember anything. In a couple weeks our country is going to be in a bad place no matter which of these two losers wins.

      • skinut says:

Clinton is rightfully chastising the fbi because comey’s actions are downright suspicious. They had the information for a month and are only now releasing it just before the election. Comey, it should be noted, is a republican who previously angered his party when he said clinton was careless with her emails, but that her actions did not rise to the level of a crime. He knew any charges brought could not be sustained. He is now trying to help his party by making this announcement, allowing them to make a lot of righteous indignation noise to whip their suuporters into a frenzy. The trouble is, there is nothing going on as far as the fbi knows. Even comey admitted that there were no emails in the device either to or from clinton. This is probably why the doj recommended comey not send the letter.
In the meantime, trump is screaming as if the situation warrants a complete change in the email investigation. He knows his supporters will believe anything he feeds them, and clearly doesn’t care what effect his rabble rousing has on the overall tone of the campaign.

    • Boots says:

Yawn. Everyone knows Michael Moore supports Hillary.

    • Boots says:

      Still he supports sweet Hillary:

It pains me to say it, but Donald Trump is still a very dangerous candidate. His voters are extremely motivated and passionate, and he is still holding on to a lead in some crucial swing states like Ohio.

I made my new movie, “Michael Moore in TrumpLand,” because I believe that Democrats can’t rest until Trump is GONE — completely, utterly and totally defeated in the kind of landslide that Republicans will be having nightmares about for decades.

But this election isn’t just about Trump (even if Trump is still the worst.) It’s about Congress. It’s about flipping the Senate, and making previously unimaginable gains in the House and in state governments everywhere.

It’s about Senate Budget Committee Chairman Bernie freaking Sanders.

If we get out the progressive vote in this crazy election, we can put Bernie in power and build the kind of progressive majority we need to make the policies behind the political revolution a reality. But that is going to take a lot of work in the next 10 days. That’s why I’m asking you to support DFA’s relentless work to maximize progressive turnout in key states.

With 10 days left, and final budget decisions being made right now, my friends at Democracy for America need your help urgently. Please chip in $3 or more today to help DFA expand its 96-hour GOTV program, get progressives to the polls, flip the Senate — and give Bernie the gavel.

Here’s the thing about Donald Trump: He has absolutely electrified his followers, but he has also scrambled the electoral map in a way that few political pundits saw coming.

That means that on Election Day, literally anything could happen. Trump and his merry band of corrupt GOP followers could eke out a horrifying come-from-behind victory. OR, we could see a progressive wave that sweeps the nation — one that puts our greatest policy dreams within our reach.

Close elections are always, always, ALWAYS won in the field. That’s why the work DFA is doing right now matters so much. DFA members are killing it on the phones and on the doors in states like North Carolina and Nevada, where the results of races that are currently neck-and-neck will determine which party will lead the Senate in 2017.

Want to see Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren running the show in the most progressive Senate ever? Then pitch in $3 — or whatever you can afford — to help DFA to expand programs like Political Revolution in My Backyard and DFA Dialer in these final pivotal days.

Thanks for staying engaged in this important election — and for supporting DFA!

      – Michael Moore

Boots, it’s really, really, weird when you refer to Hillary as Sweet Hillary. Do you say that jokingly (I hope)? I don’t believe anyone, including Bill would refer to her that way. It does catch my eye every time I see your “sweet” reference. Are you related to Hillary?

    • amela says:

If anything it’s probably the same emails that wasn’t justified for prosecution. If Huma had emails from Hillary it probably wasn’t super classified to be sent to her own laptop. Couldn’t be more sensitive than what was found on Hillary’s private email account. Why can’t wikileaks release Trumps and other Republican’s emails what are they hiding?

  2. peanutgallery says:

Clinton could have avoided this entire debacle by being honest from the start. She has lied, and tried to cover from the beginning. Everyone knows this. For her to go on the attack against Comey, is just the Clinton way. Attack the messenger. Her rant rings hollow as she is the one that could have brought everything to light last year. Perhaps America will see the justice system work, as it does for the rest of us, and Clinton will end-up behind bars. That just leaves Obama. Were he white, or a Republican, he would have been impeached years ago, and quite possibly gone to jail. America breathes a sigh of relief when these two families are gone from the political landscape. They are as dishonest as it gets, as both lie with impunity.

    • Boots says:

How has Clinton lied? Can you be specific and not just repeat some republican rant? Fact is this is nothing but more crap from republicans. They can’t discuss issues so they push imaginary issues. Who should be behind bars is probably the Donald and he may still end up behind them after his rape trial. So typical republican. Its ok if you are republican. lol

      • nalogirl says:

She said she only had one device when she actually had 14. She lied about having a private server, she only admitted to it when the press found it. She lied about Comet only giving the letter to the Republicans in Congress. She lied about taking fire when she graceless to the middle east. She lied about Bengahzji when 600 calls were made for help. I have more if you like?

      • laeboy says:

Rape trial?!?!?! Huh?!?!?! Talk about the juxtaposition of facts and imagery. Dang Boots you have gone of the deep end. Just what trial are you talking about here Boots? Please, pray tell your story to us.

    • bahIggins says:

      You’re right about that

    • kuroiwaj says:

IRT PeanutGallery, fully agree with your post. Now, the Ms Clinton’s campaign must allow Ms Loretta, the AG, to release the Order for the FBI to begin investigation the tens of thousand emails on Weiner’s computer.

Bet my House, privately Comey is eating his words today as to letting Hillary off the hook on the email scandal. lol

    • pohaku96744 says:

Yup, they are getting a warrant to serve on Weiner’s laptop. Investigators stumbled into something. Should be interesting in the next couple of days. He will cooperate with FBI. He owes Huma nothing, dumped man like a dumped women. Investigating agents probably found emails while investigating sexting… spin off case. Dumped info on Comey’s desk. Line function agents don’t like Comey.

    • beachbum11 says:

He was told to do that by Mr.O. Who is also in on this with boots.

  4. Kahu Matu says:

Like Bill, Hillary is trying to suggest any possibility that what she did may actually be legal. She knows she did wrong, everyone know it was illegal, but she is hoping to get off on a technicality or at least say some things in a public forum that are difficult to refute, and from that silence propose a different reality. I could just imagine the question, “Did you read ALL of the emails?” Clinton knows that he couldn’t have read 30000 email within the past few days, therefore doubts are raised.

    • Boots says:

I’m sorry but what exactly did Hillary do that was wrong? Here we have the husband of an ally possibly doing something wrong. So why is even Hillary being brought into this? More republican imaginary fears I guess.

    • Bumby says:

As the lying lady states I have done nothing wrong and I have not sent or received any (C) classified emails. Now if these emails showed that classified emails were sent and received by Huma’s husband email, this will prove the lying lady’s guilt and her part of obstructing justice.

On top of that the lying lady and her top aide has husbands who have sex exploits that the majority of people would call deplorable and considered illegal. Strange bedfellows.

As the lying lady also stressed, I have a team that I count on and who has done a great job. Don’t you think Comey himself has a competent team and does a great job, who has found new evidence and has advised him on the particulars of the emails sent, that will prove she lied and obstructed justice. Thus he reading a few which is enough for him that confirms this which he then sends that letter to congress.

Maybe he is smarter than we think and he knew the DOJ and the white house all in cahoots would not have indicted the lying lady anyway. Thus with this new evidence it comes to prove that the lying lady lied and that she has obstructed justice. Before the initial closing of what was found many stated that Comey is the most competent and upright person that can be trusted. If so he must of being going through a living hell and needed to do this when alerted, to give credibility back to the FBI and all its honest people and help himself to again live and work with honor and the truth and nothing but the truth.

      • mctruck says:

Contrary to your comments, there is discord within the FBI with subordinates saying that the director is not fit to lead.
Just read about it via FBI/Comey threads.

  5. Kalaheo1 says:

Blaming the guy investigating the emails is sure to blow up in their faces. Team Hillary really needs to take responsibilty here, but this “investigation” stinks and Bill Clinton meeting in secret with the Attorney General immediately before deciding to not pursue the matter certainly didn’t help.

It wasn’t FBI Director James Comey who ran the private email server in the basement of his house and deleted thousands of emails, that was Hillary Clinton.

It’s like trying to blame HPD for your speeding ticket.

    • Pocho says:

Come on now, it’s the Spin Game, the Deception Game to deflect the wrongs Lying Cheating Hillary done. I don’t know how all you people don’t get it it’s a Politician game to spin things, to deceive people going into another subject, it’s all a political game of deception. Hillary’s showing all her political savoriness in this email debacle! She’s a lawyer who didn’t remember events the FBI questioned her 38 times. Deception in which Comey succumbed to, bowing to the Clintons/Obama and the DOJ.

    • Boots says:

Responsibility for what exactly? You republicans are so good in alleging wrong doing but exactly what is wrong here? This is just a witch hunt by republicans in a desperate attempt to promote their loser of a candidate, the Groper in Chief, The Donald.

“Liberal Icon?” That sounds about right.

  8. nalogirl says:

If Clinton had been forthcoming in @)!$ and just released her emails, she wouldn’t be dealing with this now. As far as I’m concerned this was a self inflicted mess that she brought on herself by flying and illegallyusing a private server. I hopeshe loses big time! As someone said, if she gets into the WH she is prime targetforblackmail.

  9. americantaxpayer says:

Simply, if Hillary had been following the law we wouldn’t be talking about emails today, how sad……. How sad

    • cajaybird says:

IRT americantaxpayer: So true, but that would mean all the Clinton Foundation “pay for play”, Benghazi, and the rest would be part of the permanent record, as required by law, so you know that was never going to happen.

  10. stanislous says:

Yes, Yes, tell us what you have… what your proaction strategy is… Tell us all your secret strategies and plans well in advance so we cn plan accordingly… You know, like we democrats tell the enemy well in advance so they will know what our military moves are going to be….

    • beachbum11 says:

Yes the democrats do. Look at what Obama has done. Now we have a poor respect from other counties. He said he would stop wars but went into more wars. And now being buddy buddy with Cuba. What joke.

  11. bumbai says:

Look at the bright side…Hillary can’t raise her hand and take the Oath of Office if her hands are cuffed behind her back.

  12. MoiLee says:

“Democrats should ask Clinton to Step Aside”by John Kass. Chicago Tribune.Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!SEE?
I totally agree with the: “Step Aside” Hillary thing, but let’s have Tim Kaine take the reigns, no sweat for Donald Trump to win the presidency, but if it was Colonel Sanders? “Houston we may have a problem”. Bernie’s supporters were MASSIVE!
The DNC “Totally” hosed Bernie and rigged the system and yet Bernie Sanders still supports Hillary? Go figure.

  13. pohaku96744 says:

Should be interesting to see what is on the laptop. If FBI is getting the warrant, generally it is for a criminal investigation. They have to established PC before a Judge signs it. What criminal violations exist and who is the subject of the FBIs investigation will be interesting. Sad thing, does not matter most people will vote for Clinton anyway, like the sheep following the Herder. Clinton’s presidency will be under a cloud , bet Lynch stops Comedy from getting the search warrant. Federal Search Warrants have to be screened and approved by a U. S. Attorney before a Federal Judge signs it.

  14. Ronin006 says:

Hillary’s worst nightmare is (or was) her closest confidant, Huma Abedin, who apparently lied under oath that she turned over to the government all devices used for government business and all government-related emails and documents in her possession. How could she have forgotten the thousands of emails found on the computer she shared with her perverted husband, Anthony Weiner? Lying under oath is perjury and could subject Huma to some serious jail time. The question now is whether Huma will cut a deal with the F.B.I. to avoid jail time in exchange for ratting on Hillary or remain loyal to Hillary and do the time for her.

  15. DABLACK says:

Be pretty good bet that Huma gets a body bag if she turns against the lying boss. The dems will do anything to win the election with the help of the guy from Kenya and Loretta. Comey may meet something accidental too ! Look how many people that have met some weird endings regarding clinton’s path to the WH.

It’s got to a bombshell for Comey to risk his job by coming out like this 8 days before an election. If Clinton gets elected, he’ll be put under tremendous pressure to resign. So … he must have something big, something he knew could not be suppressed and would come out eventually. Something of consequence for sure, otherwise he is a fool.

    • Ronin006 says:

I agree there had to be much more in Weiner’s computer than emails about Chelsea’s wedding and other Clinton personal stuff to justify the judge issuing a subpoena to seize the computer and access the 650,000 emails contained therein. A special prosecutor needs to be appointed now to handle the investigation to ensure it is not swept under the rug by Obama or Loretta Lynch. Don’t be surprised if Comey is fired soon after the election.
