UC Davis pulls away from Hawaii for basketball win

The Hawaii basketball team ran out of gas in Northern California, falling apart down the stretch in a 68-59 loss to UC Davis tonight.

First-place Davis (19-11, 11-4 Big West) capped an undefeated 11-0 record at home in 2016-17 and avenged a senior night loss to UH last March. The Aggies face UC Irvine for the Big West regular-season title on Saturday in Irvine.

Brynton Lemar scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half, helping erase a six-point UH lead with 15 minutes left.

UH (14-14, 8-7) shot just a single free throw all game, a miss by Gibson Johnson with 6:02 left. Jack Purchase led UH with 15 points on 5-for-11 3-point shooting, while Allen added 13 points and Johnson 12.

Besides Purchase, UH went 2-for-16 on 3s. UH, which still doesn’t know if it will play in the Big West tournament, concludes the regular season at Long Beach State on Saturday. The teams are tied for fourth in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton holds down third place.

Lawrence White threw down two alley-oop dunks in the first half as part of his 5-for-5 shooting in the period worth 11 of his 14 points.

Purchase connected on his first three 3-point attempts and had a team-high nine points in the period. His first got UH on the board after it trailed 6-0, the second put UH ahead momentarily, 18-17, and the third brought the ’Bows within 22-21.

UH trailed 30-27 at the break, but Johnson opened up the second half with three straight field goals for a 33-30 advantage. White tied it up at 33 on his sixth straight make.

Johnson scored on a cut for his fourth straight UH bucket.

Leland Green connected on a wing 3 for UH’s largest lead to that point, 38-34. Noah Allen scored in transition and UH suddenly led by six with under 15 minutes to play.

UH got stuck at 42 points for more than three minutes. Purchase saved a ball from going out of bounds in the corner, then nailed a 3 from the spot for a 45-41 lead with 9:27 left.

Davis responded with consecutive layups to tie it up at 45, but Allen beat the shot clock on a drive to reclaim the lead.

Then Lemar and the Aggies surged.

Lemar hit one of two free throws, Davis got the offensive rebound on the second and Lemar hit a 3 for a 49-47 Aggies advantage. Lemar hit another 3 the next trip down and suddenly the hosts led by five.

After UH failed to corral another missed free throw, Lemar cashed in on another 3 for a 57-49 lead.

Chima Moneke (14 points, nine rebounds) converted a three-point play, extending it to a nine-point lead. Purchase cut it to six with his fifth 3 with 3:12 remaining.

UCD killed clock on its next possession with two offensive rebounds, then Darius Graham hit a dagger 3 that Purchase couldn’t answer.

Moneke capped it with a tomahawk putback dunk to extend it to double figures.
