Weather Service officials continued to monitor today a tropical disturbance southeast of the Hawaiian Islands that could develop into a cyclone.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said it has a 60 percent chance of developing into a cyclone in the next five days and a 50 percent chance in 48 hours.

The weather disturbance was about 750 miles southeast of Hilo and drifting northwest with winds of more than 28 miles an hour, National Weather Service forecaster Sam Houston said Wednesday night.

Officials said the weather may take days to develop and could turn into a cyclone or fizzle out.

Forecaster Tom Birchard said Wednesday that if it doesn’t develop into a cyclone, there is a chance the islands will see rain either during the weekend or early next week.
