Fatality in head-on crash ID’d as Hilo man, 49

Leila Fujimori

Hawaii County police identified the man who died Saturday after a two-vehicle crash on the former Saddle Road as 49-year-old Napoleon Higuera of Hilo.

Higuera was driving a 2001 Dodge Caravan heading west on the Daniel K. Inouye Highwy near the 38-mile marker when he began overtaking vehicles, and hit a 2015 Honda Fit heading east, police said.

Police received a report at 7:21 a.m. of the crash.

Higuera was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:42 a.m.

The Honda driver was a 36-year-old Mountain View woman who was taken in critical condition to the same hospital.

Police said they believe excesive speed was a factor in the crash, the 27th Hawaii island traffic fatality this year, compared to 23 at the same time last year.
