Kahului man dies in head-on crash on Maui

A 66-year-old Kahului man died in a two-vehicle collision in Maalaea.

He is identified as Manuel R. Rivera.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, police said a white 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling northbound on Honoapiilani Highway when it veered off the roadway and struck a guardrail. The vehicle then returned to the roadway and collided head-on with a gray 2011 Scion XB multi-purpose vehicle traveling southbound.

Police said the pickup truck went over the guardrail and plummeted approximately 60 feet down the side of a cliff.

The driver, a 34-year-old Lahaina man, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police said Rivera, the rear seat passenger in the Scion, was also transported to the hospital in critical condition where he later died. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Scion driver, a 39-year-old Kahului woman, was transported to the hospital in fair condition. Police said she was wearing a seatbelt.

The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s 16th traffic-related fatality compared to 21 at the same time last year.
