No tsunami threat from large Papua New Guinea quake

A preliminary magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea today.
A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea but did not cause a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials in Hawaii said today.
The quake struck at about 11:26 a.m in Hawaii and was centered 42 miles west-southwest of Angoram at a depth of about 67 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said.
