1 burned in Kapolei explosion

One person was injured today in an explosion that started a fire at Campbell Industrial Park.

About 30 firefighters responded to a report of a building fire at Green Recycling, 91-080 Hanua St., at about 11:55 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Capt. James Todd.

Workers were apparently cutting some type of fuel tank that exploded and started the fire. One man sustained burns, but was able to walk away, Todd said.

An Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman said paramedics treated a 52-year-old man for second-degree burns and took him to a hospital in serious condition.

The fire burned tires and other car parts that sent up a large amount of black smoke.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and were wrapping up before 1:30 p.m.
