UC Davis thumps UH women’s hoops team

Brian McInnis

UC Davis forward Morgan Bertsch scored 27 points on 13-for-20 shooting and the Aggies remained in first place in the Big West Conference with a 68-56 win over the Hawaii women’s basketball team tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Aggies (22-4, 12-1 BWC) led by as many as 25 points midway through the third quarter behind their conference player of the year candidate. They shot 50.9 percent from the field in completing a home-and-home season sweep, having won by 24 points in Davis last month.

Senior guard Sarah Toeaina led the Wahine (10-15, 3-9 BWC) with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Julissa Tago added 13 points.

With Bertsch sitting down the stretch, Toeaina scored a three-point play and Tago followed with a 3 to bring the Wahine within 13 with under five minutes remaining.

Tago hit another off a screen to make it 66-55 with two minutes to go. UH had a chance to trim it further but committed some turnovers.
