STAR-ADVERTISER / FEB. 2016

John John Florence got some air on this wave at the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surfing contest at Waimea Bay. A high surf advisory for north and east shores of isles from Kauai to Hawaii island is in effect through 6 p.m. Thursday.

The islands can look forward to large surf and cooler weather for the next few days.

A high surf advisory for north and east shores of isles from Kauai to Hawaii island is in effect through 6 p.m. Thursday. The advisory also covers the north-facing shores of Niihau.

Weather officials say a moderate to large, north-northeast swell will produce hazardous surf along most north and east shores of exposed islands through Thursday. Surf is expected to reach 6 to 9 feet along the east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island. Surf is expected to reach 10 to 15 feet along north shores of Niihau, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island.

The impacts include strong, breaking waves and currents, making swimming dangerous.

A wind advisory, meanwhile, is in effect for Hawaii island summits through 6 a.m. Thursday. Southwest to west winds of 50 to 55 miles per hour, and occasional gusts up to 65 miles per hour, are expected to make driving difficult at the summits.

A small craft advisory is in effect for Kauai, leeward Maui and the windward side of Hawaii island until 6 p.m. today.

Forecasters say breezy trade winds will prevail into the weekend, delivering periods of clouds and showers favoring windward areas. Showers are expected to be especially active over the windward sides of Maui and Hawaii island today. Cooler air moving in from the northeast will also keep temperatures lower than normal over the next few days.
