Makena beach reopens after closure due to shark sighting

A shark sighting in waters off of Makena State Park prompted lifeguards to close the area to beachgoers briefly today.

A 12-foot tiger shark was was observed swimming in waters about 50 feet from the shore at 10:45 a.m.

Lifeguards and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources warned the public to stay out of the water.

The closure was lifted at 12:45 p.m.
