Pedestrian, 70, who died after being struck in Kona identified

A 70-year-old man who died after he was struck by a vehicle in Kailua-Kona has been identified as Peter Finnegan.

Finnegan of Kailua-Kona died from injuries sustained in the crash that occurred on Dec. 5 on Ane Keohokalole Highway at the intersection of Manawalea Street.

Police said a 2007 Toyota pickup truck operated by a 36-year-old Kailua-Kona man was traveling south on Ane Keohokalole Highway when the vehicle struck a pedestrian, later identified as Finnegan, shortly before 6:15 p.m.

Finnegan was walking within the southbound lane of the roadway at the time of the collision. Police said he was not in a marked crosswalk.

Finnegan sustained critical injuries in the crash and was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The pickup truck driver did not sustain any injuries.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were involved.
