One man is dead and another is in police custody following a three-car accident in Nanakuli on Sunday.

According to police, the 3:30 p.m. incident was triggered when a Lexus traveling west on Farrington Highway near Auyong Homestead Road crossed a double solid line and collided with an oncoming Chevrolet.

The force of the collision caused the Chevrolet to spin counterclockwise. Left in a position perpendicular to the lanes of oncoming traffic, the Chevrolet was then broadsided by a Jeep.

The 39-year-old driver of the Chevrolet died at the scene.

Five others were injured, including a 3-year-old boy and a woman in her 40s who were transported in stable condition to a trauma center; a 35-year-old man and 27-year-old woman who were taken in stable condition to an area hospital; and a man in his 20s who refused transport, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.

The driver of the Lexus, identified as a man in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, according to Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Traffic on Farrington Highway was slowed for several hours as a contra-flow lane was set up from Kahau Street to Auyong Homestead Road so police could investigate the crash.

This was the 15th traffic fatality this year on Oahu’s roads, compared with 17 at this time last year.

Nanakuli has been the scene of several recent traffic deaths.

On Dec. 28 a crash near the Kahe Point power plant killed three people, including a toddler, and seriously injured five others.

The crash involved a 2010 Honda sedan carrying four people, which collided with a 2007 Nissan pickup truck at about 8:30 p.m., police said. The passengers in the Honda, an 18-year-old woman, a 1-year-old girl and a man in his 30s, died at the scene.

On Jan. 3 a pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing Farrington Highway near the Kahe power plant. Police said several cars swerved to avoid the man as he crossed the highway. 

He was struck by a Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by a woman in her 40s.
