Search resumes for missing diver off Kaena Point

The Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety resumed the search for a free diver who disappeared in waters off Kaena Point on Saturday.

Nicholas Spotkaeff, 56, was last seen by his son swimming about 100 yards north of Kaena Point at 2:44 p.m.

Rescuers conducted land, sea and air searches on Saturday afternoon but could not locate the missing man. A diving float and spear believed to belong to Spotkaeff were recovered in the ocean near Kaena Point.

Coast Guard personnel continued to search the ocean overnight and the full search resumed early Sunday morning.

Spotkaeff was last seen wearing green boardshorts.

Anyone with information about Spotkaeff’s whereabouts is asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Honolulu at 842-2600.
