Cargill Inc. said it recalled 35.7 million pounds of ground turkey and halted production at an Arkansas plant after a salmonella outbreak linked to one death and 77 illnesses in 26 states.

The products subject to recall today bear the establishment number "P-963" inside the USDA mark of inspection. A list of products can be found at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/Recall_060_2011_Release/index.asp.

Consumers who bought any of the listed items are asked to return them to the store from which they were purchased. Questions about the recall may be directed to Cargill at (888) 812-1646.

The meat was produced at the Cargill Meat Solutions plant in Springdale, Arkansas, from February through August, Wayzata, Minnesota-based Cargill said in a statement. The recall was prompted by an internal investigation and information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the company said.

As of Aug. 1, 77 people had been sickened by the salmonella Heidelberg bacteria since March, with one death reported, in Sacramento, Calif., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Michigan and Ohio reported the most cases, 10 each, the CDC said. Texas had nine, Illinois seven and California six. (Hawaii has not reported any cases.)

The initial symptoms of salmonella poisoning are usually diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Most people recover without treatment. In some cases, hospitalization is necessary, and an infection can be deadly if not treated promptly with antibiotics. The Heidelberg strain of the bacteria is antibiotic resistant.

Older adults, infants and people with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe salmonella illness, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
