Republican Presidential Candidate Donald J. Trump, speaks during the final day of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Thursday, July 21, 2016.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. >> With 100 days left before the fall election, Hillary Clinton’s campaign bus wound its way through Donald Trump’s America as the Republican nominee picked a new fight with the bereaved father of a Muslim Army captain.

In a well-received Democratic convention speech, Muslim lawyer Khizr Khan said Trump has “sacrificed nothing and no one” for his country. Trump disputed that Saturday, saying he’d given up a lot for his businesses.

“I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures,” he said, in an interview with ABC’s “This Week.”

He added: “Sure those are sacrifices.”

Khan gave a moving tribute to their son, Humayun, who posthumously received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart after he was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004.

Trump also reiterated his criticism of Khan’s wife, Ghazala, who stood silently on stage, wearing a headscarf. “If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”

Ghazala Khan has said she didn’t speak because she’s still overwhelmed by her grief and can’t even look at photos of her son without crying. Trump’s comments sparked immediate outrage on social media, both for attacking a mourning mother and because many considered them racist and anti-Muslim.

In a statement, Clinton said she was “very moved” by Ghazala Khan’s appearance.

“This is a time for all Americans to stand with the Khans and with all the families whose children have died in service to our country,” she said. “Captain Khan and his family represent the best of America and we salute them.”

Trump’s comments about Khan come a day after, while campaigning in Colorado, he attacked retired four-star general John Allen while holding a rally in front of military aircraft, and slammed a Colorado Springs fire marshal for capping attendance at his event. The fire marshal, Brett Lacey, was recently honored by the city as “Civilian of the Year” for his role in helping the wounded at a 2015 mass shooting at a local Planned Parenthood.

“Our commander-in-chief shouldn’t insult and deride our generals, retired or otherwise,” Clinton told a crowd gathered on the factory floor. “That should really go without saying.”

She said Americans are living in a time of “really hot politics.”

“People say all kinds of things. Hateful things. Insulting things,” she said. “And sometimes because of all the static going back and forth, we lose track of where we are.”

Post-convention it has become clear the presidential race will be fought in the struggling manufacturing towns, cities and rural farming communities of the Rust Belt, as Clinton used the days following her convention to try and win back some of the white working class voters that once made up a key piece of the Democratic Party’s electoral coalition. Trump’s anti-immigrant, anti-diversity, anti-trade message has appealed to those voters, who feel frustrated with an economic recovery that’s largely left them behind.

On Saturday, Clinton made stops in rural Western Pennsylvania, a largely white part of the swing state that traditionally votes Republican.

Clinton is playing up economic opportunity, diversity and national security. Democrats hammered home those themes this week with an array of politicians, celebrities, gun-violence victims, law enforcement officers and activists of all races and sexual orientation. Their goal is to turn out the coalition of minority, female and young voters that twice elected Obama while blunting some of the expected losses among the white men drawn to Trump’s message.

Trump has made plans to visit some of the same areas Clinton is campaigning in during her three-day bus tour through Ohio and Pennsylvania, scheduling Monday stops in Columbus and Cleveland.

The Trump campaign swaggered out of the convention weeks, feeling bullish about the bump the nominee received from his own nominating convention.

Trump barnstormed in Iowa and Colorado as the Democratic convention wound down. He’s also continuing his effort to try and expand the electoral map by venturing into a pair of traditionally blue states: Maine and his home state of New York, which he has repeatedly vowed to put in play despite polling that has him well behind Clinton there.

While Clinton and her running mate, Tim Kaine, attempted to sell their positive economic message, much of their strategy centers on undermining Trump, particularly the business record that makes up the core of his argument to voters. Joined on the bus tour by her husband, Bill Clinton, Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, Clinton stopped at a toy and plastics manufacturer in Hatfield on Friday, where she and Kaine cast Trump as a con artist out for his own gain.

Clinton highlighted Trump’s use of outsourcing to manufacture some of his branded products, arguing he’s profited from the same foreign labor he now blames for killing U.S. jobs.

“What part of America first leads Trump to make Trump dress shirts in Bangladesh not Ashland, Pennsylvania,” said Clinton. “I just find it so maddening that Trump goes around saying this and all the stuff he makes in other countries.”

In 1980, on the first day after the Republican convention, Ronald Reagan made his first campaign appearance as the official nominee in Philadelphia, Mississippi, at the Neshoba County Fair. Philadelphia is known for a single, horrible historic event — the slaughter of three civil rights workers, Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner. Mindful that 1980 was the first time since 1960 that George Wallace was not a candidate, Reagan chose Philadelphia for this highly watched campaign kickoff to win the support of white racists by affirming his support for “states rights,” the rallying cry for those opposed to the Federal Government’s enforcement of integration. On the first day of the post-convention period of the 2016 Presidential campaign, Donald Trump, Jr. went to Philadelphia, Mississippi to appear at the Neshoba County Fair where he defended the Mississippi state flag, which includes the confederate battle flag. This was no coincidence. Even the bungling Trump campaign had to know exactly what they were doing and that Trump Jr’s appearance at the Neshoba County Fair would be seen as a salute to Reagan’s dog-whistle appeal to racism.

trumpy’s behavior is so sad, and he wants to be president? his supporters should be ashamed, this dude is nothing more than a loud mouth bigot, no classs, no shame. for this he will lose by a mile. we cannot have an idiot for a president, most americans can see this. he would make America worse.

    • Waterman2 says:

Idiocy , Exactly why Hillary has to be defeated. When you add the crime and self enrichment at our countrie’s expense the is no excuse for her to even be in the running.

      • BluesBreaker says:

Trump truly has no class, as this incident shows. He is also a coward, afraid to debate Hillary by claiming the NFL sent him a letter asking him not to debate. A claim the NFL said was completely false. Trump appears incapable of telling the truth about anything. He’s truly a pathetic sleazebag.

        • nodaddynotthebelt says:

According to ABC News, Trump did in fact claim that the NFL wrote a letter to him regarding the scheduling. But the NFL claims that they never wrote him that letter. And yes, it is true that Trump manufactured products overseas while he now attacks the very thing that he was doing. He states that he created jobs but many of those were in foreign countries.

        • nodaddynotthebelt says:

Further, the jobs that he created in his Vegas venture resulted in businesses going down as he used every tactic to avoid paying for the services and material. In one case, a contractor asked to be paid as his mother was lying on a hospital bed. Trump’s agent basically turned him down with an insult to boot.

  3. klastri says:

There is nothing too vile for Mr. Trump to say at this point. Nothing.

He is now equating his “sacrifice” of what he considers hard work (interspersed between his three marriages and extra-marital sexual affairs with women who were not one of his wives) with the sacrifice of losing a son in battle.

The military is now turning on Mr. Trump. His loss in November cannot be humiliating enough for me. He’s a psychotic.

    • d_bullfighter says:

“The military is now turning on Mr. Trump.” Really Klastri? Another unsubstantiated statement by you or do you have any evidence to support your assertion?

  4. 808comp says:

I’d like to hear him say that if he is elected President he will start making all of his merchandise back here in the US instead of over seas.

  5. Kriya says:

This evil, despicable excuse for a human being is now insulting Gold Star families grieving over the loss of their children who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

    • Ronin006 says:

Mr. Khan’s entire speech was a direct attack on Trump. Did the Khan’s and the Democratic Party really believe that Trump would take it without responding? In politics and in war, when you are attacked you counter attack and that is what Trump did.

      • klastri says:

You think like Mr. Trump. Not surprising for someone who has brushed away his non-stop personality disorder flares.

Trump is a cruel sadist who does not honor and respect Gold Star families. He had the option to honor the family while firmly restating his (ridiculous) position. But he can’t act like a normal human being. Instead, lashed out like the 12 year-old that he is at the mother, who was silent during the speech. A woman too grief stricken to speak.

Mr. Trump is profoundly mentally ill.

  6. MillionMonkeys says:

I get why the frightened, the frustrated, and the disoriented gravitate to Trump. He says things from his gut without thinking, things that immediately address your fears and anger. But does he have any actual plan to accomplish any of his promises? NO, and even his fans know that.

Hillary has made some serious blunders, has been her own worst enemy. But she has actually given thought to the things she promises. She could help her own candidacy by sincerely apologizing and offering a more caring, credible, and competent alternative to Trump.

For Trump fans: How will he build his Big Wall? Does “I’ve created jobs” mean anything, considering he is a businessman who “created jobs” by hiring employees to labor while he grabbed the profits? Has he ever created a job to help anyone outside of his family? Has he shown ANY ability to communicate and work with real-life military leaders? What is his real-life plan to end terrorism?

    • sarge22 says:

Who let the monkeys out? Like I said the democrats are in panic mode. They have absolutely nothing positive to say about lying HiLIARy. Ain’t that a shame. Should be another fun day. Trump 2016

      • klastri says:

The Democrats are not in panic mode. We’re laughing at the disaster Mr. Trump is making of his campaign.

As long as Mr. Trump’s staff does not sew his lips shut, Mr. Trump will lose the election all by himself. He’s doing a great job of that now.

You have already chosen to criticize this grieving family elsewhere. You have no shame. None.

      • HanabataDays says:

So tell us, Sarge. What do you think of Drumpf insulting and belittling the parents of a fallen soldier? What does the Sarge have to say about that?

      • Ikefromeli says:

Hmmmn, just reported, Clintons pat convention bump is now 6% nationally and over 10% in the key state of Pennsylvania.

      • aomohoa says:

I don’t particularly trust Hillary but if you think we will be better off with Trump you are as crazy as he is.

      • keaukaha says:

There really isn’t much to say or do for us democrats. You give the fool enough rope and he will surely hang himself. The only people in panic mode for sure are his advisors because as they struggle to deal with his controversies, the dummy creates ten more. It is actually very entertaining for me. All I need is my beer and pupus.

      • nalogirl says:

I agree, 3 top news stories on Trump, all negative. It is as if the DNC emails never happened, but not to the informed voter. Anybody but Hillary.

        • keaukaha says:

It doesn’t happen because Chump doesn’t have the temperament and patience to ride out the storm. He chooses to engage and be combative at the drop of a dime. I am amazed that he has the amount of suppoters that he has. What scares me is how many other unstable people are out there.

I have been reading your daily comments and I am truly amazed that you choose to defend Trump. Either you are a troll or you REALLY dislike Clinton. The things that Trumps has said during his campaign are just absolutely stupid. He insults people in the most childish ways, calling people names and spreads ridiculous rumors. Is this really the person you want to lead our country?

  9. dontbelieveinmyths says:

So tell me Mr. Khan and the liberal media: What exactly has Hilary Clinton sacrificed? If you’re going to criticize one, you need to call the same thing on the other. I guess in politics, no one can see the hypocrisy.

    • klastri says:

You are not correct – probably because you did not hear the entire speech.

An adult could not write the comment you wrote after listening to the entire speech.

This has nothing whatever to do with Mrs. Clinton. Nothing.

      • dontbelieveinmyths says:

“In a well-received Democratic convention speech, Muslim lawyer Khizr Khan said Trump has “sacrificed nothing and no one” for his country.” Uh, from the article, Mr. Khan called out Trump about not sacrificing. If he’s going to do that, I’ll ask again, what has Clinton sacrificed? If the republicans got a parent from a casualty of war to make the same accusations about Hilary, what would be the democrats response.

        • HanabataDays says:

Pose your hypotheticals all you want. Let’s see what happens, indeed, if the tables were turned. You might be surprised.

        • klastri says:

They already did that. Looks like you didn’t watch the RNC convention.

The reaction from Democrats was respectful silence.

Unlike the psychotic Donald Trump and his followers.

        • Manoa_Fisherman says:

Yes, Trump did not serve. What about Bill Clinton? Remember the attempts he made to avoid the draft? • keaukaha says:

Mr.Khan is the one who lost his son defending our country so if you have also suffered that extreme sacrifice then he can tell you go to you know where.

    • 808ikea says:

I think the point is that Clinton recognizes the good in Muslims and the sacrifices that they have made. While Trump prefers to ignore Muslim sacrifices and isolate a group of people because of their religious faith. There is no hypocrisy in this issue.

  10. lespark says:

Very well crafted with the desired effect. Give credit to the speech writers, the props – a very professional bash job.
Mr. Khan’s son heroism was 1 of 14 Muslims who died in combat since 9/11/2001. Let’s not forget the Thousands of Americans who preceded his son. Men and women who didn’t read the Constitution but died for it so Mr. Khan could come to America. Why didn’t he thank them for their ultimate sacrifices.

It’s not a dream for many Americans anymore.

People have short memories. $5,600,000 for the veterans? Pence’s son a Marine.

If running for POTUS against all odds isn’t a sacrifice what is?
The life Trump saves might be yours.

    • klastri says:

Yes, criticize a grieving family. That’s your style.

You are every bit as base and as vile as Mr. Trump.

      • lespark says:

Klas, haven’t you lost a love one in combat who never read the Constitution just so you and Mr. Khan can insult a Man who had nothing to do with his son’s death. Trump is sacrificing enough trying to make a better life for America. I demand an apology. What’s wrong with you. Are you sick?

        • TigerEye says:

“Let’s not forget the Thousands of Americans who preceded his son.”
How about let’s not forget that “Muslim” and “American” are not mutually exclusive (no matter how much you want them to be).

        • d_bullfighter says:

A case could be made for being Muslim and American as mutually exclusive. Someone would have to explain to me how a devout Muslim who upholds sharia law could also be loyal to the constitution? Any thoughts TigerEye?

Pence son not running for potus. Trump sons? Service?

    • nodaddynotthebelt says:

Could you share with us where you got the one out of fourteen Muslims who died serving our country since 2001? And equating running for office is a sacrifice comparable to dying for your country is simply absurd.

    • el_burro_sabio says:

I would say it was foolish for Humayun Khan to have enlisted and served given that people like LessPark belittle his ultimate sacrifice. Thousands did die before him, thousands more will die after him and I believe most American appreciate their sacrifice regardless of their race or religion.

  11. Maipono says:

Khizr Khan’s loss of his son Humayun is very difficult and Humayun’s sacrifice for our freedom is to be cherished. But Khizr Khan was speaking at HilLIARy’s convention, and he made charges that were insulting to Trump, that was not right either. By saying that Trump “sacrificed nothing for our country” shows an insensitivity to Trump and it deserved a response.

  12. Cellodad says:

Once again, Mr. Trump seems to prove that in his case, logorrhea truly is a social disease.

  13. klastri says:

Mr. Trump is a coward who avoided the draft and then couldn’t remember what his medical deferment was. And despite that, he’s criticizing a grieving Gold Star family.

Trump is a disgrace to the United States. He’s has become an international laughingstock.

  14. Bothrops says:

This is how you treat the parents of those who have died in defense of our country

    “Executive Mansion,
    Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

    Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.

    Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
    A. Lincoln”

    Lincoln was a Republican.

    • lespark says:

I don’t think this mother of five went up on stage and insulted a man who had nothing to do with the death of her sons. Then for added emphasis exhibits his persecuted wife and the pocket Constitution for maximum effect. He should have insulted Leon Panetta, crooked Hillary and Obama. This kind of theatrics happens only at a Democrat event.
      Shameful how they exploit people.

  15. HanabataDays says:

Trump the Troglodyte — lowbrow and low class. Money can’t buy you class (and apparently he’s spent most of his anyway).

A draft dodger insulting the parents of a soldier who died defending his country? Maybe next we’ll see him at the airport spitting on returning troops. Seriously, anyone plan to vote for this lowlife?

  16. Ikefromeli says:

Mr. Trump, so what do we now at the point:

    A profound coward (see 4 dubious draft deferments);

    A lazy and poor student of both public policy (he recently was quoted as saying he wants to uphold article 8 of the constitution, there is NO article 8);

    He is petty, crass and juvenile (see the last 14 months, to many incidents to list);

    He no comportment, carriage and respect of office;

    He has no idea whatsoever how government works or the role of the presidency in the global community;

    He dislikes women, people of color, short people, people with disabilities and those of specific religious affiliation;

The intellectuals and policy wonks of his own party, outwardly reject him; and

Well he is just grotesque pig of man, whose favorite hobby is habitual embellishment.

  17. bsdetection says:

  19. st1d says:

trump is one dimensional, hip shooting at phantoms and to brash for politicians. unbelievable that he got this far without major funding and practically no professional political staff.

yet, he remains within 5 polling points of the female felon who, despite having millions upon millions of pay-for-play campaign and foundation donations and running thousands upon thousands of daily ads in every media, still finds her self thrashing around in scandal after scandal.

trump’s persona and branding feed the public’s desire to see a political outsider win the election and make substantial corrections in the downward spiral america has taken during the “awful legacy of the last eight years,” as bill clinton put it.

in contrast, the female felon is wallowing in waffling poll numbers despite her well financed campaign, well greased political machine and fluff reporting from the media.

  20. Ikefromeli says:

Donald J. Trump, confronting a daunting electoral map and a significant financial disadvantage, is preparing to fall back from an expansive national campaign and concentrate the bulk of his time and money on just three or four states that his campaign believes he must sweep in order to win the presidency.

Even as Mr. Trump has ticked up in national polls in recent weeks, senior Republicans say his path to the 270 Electoral College votes needed for election has remained narrow — and may have grown even more precarious. It now looks exceedingly difficult for him to assemble even the barest Electoral College majority without beating Hillary Clinton in a trifecta of the biggest swing states: Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

President Obama won all three states in 2008 and 2012, and no Republican has won Pennsylvania in nearly three decades.

With a divisive campaign message that has alienated many women and Hispanics, Mr. Trump appears to have pushed several traditional swing states out of his own reach. According to strategists on both sides of the race, polling indicates that Mrs. Clinton has a solid upper hand in Colorado and Virginia, the home state of Senator Tim Kaine, her running mate. Both states voted twice for George W. Bush, who assiduously courted Hispanic voters and suburban moderates.

In addition, Trump allies have grown concerned about North Carolina, a Republican-leaning state that has large communities of black voters and college-educated whites — two audiences with which Mr. Trump is deeply unpopular.

Long story short– the coward in chief is in huggeeee trouble.

  21. Ikefromeli says:

    3
Having effectively shut the door on himself in many states by alienating Hispanics, Blacks and many women, Donald J. Trump may need to sweep the three biggest swing states — Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania — in order to win. No Republican has done that since 1988.

Trouble is that he trailing in PA by 11%, and both Ohio and Florida.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life beyond and the call of duty: Private Barney F. Hajiro distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action on 19, 22, and October 29, 1944, in the vicinity of Bruyeres and Biffontaine, eastern France. Private Hajiro, while acting as a sentry on top of an embankment on October 19, 1944, in the vicinity of Bruyeres, France, rendered assistance to allied troops attacking a house 200 yards away by exposing himself to enemy fire and directing fire at an enemy strong point. He assisted the unit on his right by firing his automatic rifle and killing or wounding two enemy snipers. On October 22, 1944, he and one comrade took up an outpost security position about 50 yards to the right front of their platoon, concealed themselves, and ambushed an 18-man, heavily armed, enemy patrol, killing two, wounding one, and taking the remainder as prisoners. On October 29, 1944, in a wooded area in the vicinity of Biffontaine, France, Private Hajiro initiated an attack up the slope of a hill referred to as “Suicide Hill” by running forward approximately 100 yards under fire. He then advanced ahead of his comrades about 10 yards, drawing fire and spotting camouflaged machine gun nests. He fearlessly met fire with fire and single-handedly destroyed two machine gun nests and killed two enemy snipers. As a result of Private Hajiro’s heroic actions, the attack was successful. Private Hajiro’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit, and the United States Army.[11]

It took 55 years after the war for Mr.Hajiro to receive the Medal of Honor. Son of immigrants. He wanted nothing but to serve. His parents were true Americans.

For his heroic actions on July 7, 1944, Ted T. Tanouye was posthumously awarded the Army’s second-highest decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross.[8] A 1996 review of service records for Asian Americans who received the Distinguished Service Cross during World War II led to Tanouye’s award being upgraded to the Medal of Honor. In a ceremony at the White House on June 21, 2000, his surviving family was presented with his Medal of Honor by President Bill Clinton. Twenty-one other Asian Americans also received the medal during the ceremony, all but seven of them posthumously.[9]
Mr. Tanouye died savings his men. His family got nothing. Took the government 55 years. You want to talk about sacrifice, Mr. Khan, Hillary, Barrack. You people don’t know what the word means. You people are phonies. I want an apology from all of you.

Kuroda, Teruya,?These names sound familiar? Kuroda Auto Body, Times Super Market (Teruya). Families who lost family protecting the United States. They did not read the Constitution, they were discriminated upon before, during and after the war. Gold Star? What is that? Hawaii AJA made the ultimate sacrifice.
Inouye? Lost a limb and almost died so Mr. Khan could even come to America. Where’s the thank you?

Thank you for bringing up these examples. What do the AJAs and Humayun Khan have in common? Despite their country looking upon them with suspicion and treating their people like crap, they chose to serve America anyway. Why did war heroes like Dan Inouye and countless others wait for years to get their medals? Because people who should have appreciated their service for our country didn’t appreciate their service, just as you don’t appreciate the sacrifice that Humayun Khan gave. Will Muslims who serve our country have to wait for 40 years to be recognized like our local heroes? I hope not but I won’t hold my breath.

As an independent, Republicans should be ashamed of nominating a full blown sociopath for the highest office in the land. Trump should be institutionalized.
