Hawaii island police continue to investigate an attempted car theft at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Oct. 8.

According to a police news release today, a 20-year-old Volcano man found a male suspect attempting to steal his SUV. The suspect exited the SUV and got into a truck parked beside it as the victim attempted to detain him. The suspect assaulted the victim before getting away in the truck, which was last seen traveling west on West Kawili Street.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9, and at least 200 pounds with a heavy build and a fair complexion. He was wearing pants and a T-shirt over a black long-sleeved shirt. His face was partly concealed.

The truck was described as an older model, foreign make, two-wheel-drive pickup truck that was light in color with a darker bed.

Detectives continue to check nearby locations and buildings for the existence of video surveillance.
