A high surf warning for areas of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Niihau, and Maui  is now in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The warning is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau; north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui and west-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai.

On Oahu, north shores should see 21- to 28-foot wave faces Monday night. West shores will see 15 to 22-foot surf Monday night.

The swell will build overnight and peak early Tuesday. But a new swell will push surf back above warning levels through Tuesday afternoon.

The swell will gradually decline until Friday, when another northwest swell will begin arriving, peaking Saturday. The swell could also reach warning level heights.

The National Weather Service warns of ocean water surging and sweeping across beaches, impacts to coastal properties and infrastructure, powerful rip currents at most beaches, and large breaking waves and strong currents at harbor entrances and channels.

Mariners should use extreme caution when entering or leaving port.
