Honolulu’s most-popular dog breeds revealed

The French Bulldog was the most popular dog breed in Honolulu in 2015, according to an announcement by the American Kennel Club today.
Honolulu’s top dog was followed, in rank order, by the Labrador Retriever, No. 3 Pomeranian, the Poodle, and at No. 5, the Dachshund.
Nationally, the Labrador Retriever took the top spot again, for the 25th consecutive year, according to AKC registration data.
However, AKC notes that the French Bulldog is closing in, having moved up three spots to sixth in 2015 from ninth in 2014.
“The Frenchie has risen 32 spots over the past decade and shows no signs of stopping,” said Gina DiNardo, AKC vice president, in a statement.
The French Bulldog also was named the top dog in New York City, Miami and San Francisco.
The German Shepherd was the second-most-popular breed, followed by Golden Retrievers, standard Bulldogs and Beagles, at No. 5.

really funny… French bull dogs now, before that was Chiwauwa(spell?) before that was Pit Bulls… poor dogs… entertament for humans…
I thought it was still Chihuahua’s or Pitbulls.French bull dogs are cut but they don’t breathe well here and don’t do well in the heat. I guess doodles don’t count because they are not an official breed.

French Bulldogs can’t breathe well on exertion because they were bred to have smashed faces. Same for Pugs. Veterinary surgery can correct it. Rhinoplasty. Cut off those two pieces of skin from the nose opening preventing the poor thing from inhaling normally. Done with an electrocautery knife under anesthesia. One day operation. I think they can stand the heat. Their breathing difficulty is mistaken for heat stroke. CUUUUUUTE lil buggers, no? Don’t you dare let them sleep outdoors. Pets should always be allowed indoors and treated as family. Talk to them, eat with them, take them wherever you go, and love them kindly.
I feel sorry for any dogs that I see living outdoors all day and night. If people are getting a dog to just be a watch dog get an alarm system. Only get a dog if you want them to be part of your family and you will love them forever. That means also being responsible enough to spayed/neuter them,spend time with them, walk them, get there shots, etc.
You would become jealous when you see the way I treat my dogs just like a human kid. They even get to sleep on the same bed with me under the blanket.
Instead of a story glorifying buying a pure bred dog from dog breeders how about ongoing stories of people adopting dogs in Hawaii from shelters and other rescue organization where breed is NOT important?
inverse, there have been some stories, and I must agree with you. I have had pure breeds and mutts from the humane society and I’ll take the mutts everyday. They seem to appreciate the care and comfort of life and obey a lot better!! They greet you with the “Thank you” all the time!!!
Hawaii has had is share of lowlife breeders breeding dogs in filthy, inhumane conditions just so that can make big money from residents willing to shell out thousands of dollars for a “pure breed”. I agree some pure breed dogs have made wonderful pets but don’t have to glorify pure breeds. Instead the media should just focus on the dogs that need to be adopted.
Just don’t get a dog from a puppy mill. If you want a particular breed I see nothing wrong with it. Getting a dog at the shelter is wonderful too. Just don’t do it on a whim or because it cheaper. Don’t get a dog unless you are responsible in the way I mentioned in a previous comment.
I’m surprised Chihuahua isn’t in the top five. Seems like I see those horrible ankle biters everywhere.
So what is the most popular breed of politicians in Hawaii? The ones that have a built in kangaroo pocket for the lobbyist to fill up with the bribes.
