Illegal lizard captured in Waianae

The lizard measured about 12-inches long and was captured outside of a home in Waianae on Puuhulu Road.
An illegal lizard was captured in Waianae last Friday, the state Department of Agriculture said.
A woman found the lizard outside of her Waianae home on Puuhulu Road and initially thought she captured an iguana. Her son called the Department of Agriculture and when quarantine inspectors arrived they discovered it to be a bearded dragon.
It’s unknown where the 12-inch long lizard came from.
Bearded dragons are native to central Australia and are common pets on the Mainland, but illegal in Hawaii.
Anyone possessing illegal animals are subject to fines up to $200,000 and up to three years in jail. Anyone with information or knowledge of illegal animals in Hawaii is asked to call the department’s pest hotline at 643-PEST (7378).
