Circuit Judge Karen Ahn said Monday morning she will rule in 21 days on whether she will unseal transcripts of closed court proceedings in federal agent Christopher Deedy’s murder case.

The Hawaii Supreme Court had directed that Ahn hold a hearing on the request by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now to make public the transcripts.

Ahn told the lawyers she will rule within 21 days, the time specified in the high court’s ruling.

Deedy’s murder trial ended with Ahn declaring a mistrial Aug. 26 after the jury reported it could not reach a verdict.

Ahn held closed court sessions and cleared the courtroom at one point before the mistrial ruling.

The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now asked the high court to issue orders unsealing the transcripts and directed Ahn not to close court sessions without first giving the media and public a chance to object.

The high court last month temporarily sent the case back to Ahn to consider unsealing the transcripts.

Jury selection for Deedy’s retrial on the murder charge is scheduled for June in Ahn’s courtroom.

Deedy is charged with the 2011 fatal shooting of Kollin Elderts at a Waikiki McDonald’s restaurant.
