Lifeguards rescue 3 people and a dog from capsized boat

Lifeguards on rescue watercraft and a charter fishing boat helped rescue three people and a dog from an 18-foot boat that capsized off Glass Beach in Eleele Saturday afternoon.

The three males on the boat were on a fishing trip when the 18-foot boat, similar to a Boston Whaler, began filling with water after the boat shifted when a new motor kicked in at about 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters from the Hanapepe fire station and two lifeguards on rescue watercraft from the Poipu tower responded to the scene.

The jet ski shuttled the victims to a nearby Holo Holo Charters fishing boat. From there, the Holo Holo Charters boat brought them to the pier at Port Allen Harbor.

Lifeguards on the recue watercraft used the capsized boat’s anchor to secure the boat until the owner could arrange for salvage operations.
