Detectives believe a 45-year-old male shot and killed a 42-year-old woman Monday night before killing himself around 10 p.m. at an apartment complex on Hanalima Street on Kauai.
A 45-year-old Kauai man fatally shot his ex-wife in front of their 9-year-old daughter then killed himself late Monday, police said.
Kauai police identified the 42-year-old woman as Celestae Gibbons and her 45-year-old ex-husband as Justin Gibbons.
At about 10 p.m. Monday, police said, Celestae Gibbons arrived home at Halelani Village condominiums on Hanalima Street with her 9-year-old daughter. Her ex-husband approached her after she exited the vehicle while their daughter was in the backseat.
Police said an argument ensued outside the vehicle when Justin shot her. Celestae Gibbons ran to a nearby unit to seek shelter but Justin Gibbons followed her inside the apartment and shot her again, according to police. He then ran outside of the complex and fatally shot himself.
Both Celestae and Justin Gibbons were pronounced dead at the scene.
Court records show the couple divorced last month.
Their daughter was not injured and is now in the custody of state Child Protective Services, according to Kauai County officials.
Police are continuing their investigation.

Headline: “Man, woman dead after apparent murder-suicide on Kauai” Shouldn’t it be “…dead in apparent …”? A person dies IN a murder or dies IN a suicide, not AFTER the murder or suicide.
“After” sounds better. They are in a state of being “dead” after the murder-suicide occurred.
You people are way over thinking this story.
What a coward.
There’s a special place in hell for a coward who murders the mother of his child, then murders himself, all in front of his young child. That’s a triple whammy that this poor child must live through for the rest of her life of maybe 80 years. How terribly sad.
I feel for the daughter so much. She has to deal with this horrible incident for the rest of her life. I hope she is able to get as much professional help as possible.
There may have been some twisted reasoning to shoot your estranged wife, then yourself. But to do it in front of your nine-year-old daughter is unconscionable.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but that was pretty much a loser move on Daddy’s part. Everyone loses, especially his daughter.

Guns don’t kill people, sick people kill people. If guns were the culprit you’d see cops, soldiers and civilians going on killing sprees against all of humanity to no end. Trying to ban guns is like the war on drugs and we all know how well the war on drugs turned out. haaaa
One gun killed two people. How do you know this person was sick? All cops I know dont go on killing sprees. Banning guns would work if the laws were like the war on drugs in third world countries. Execution.
