Maui residents alert firefighters to Kahoolawe brush fire

Maui firefighters battled brush fires on Maui and Kahoolawe today.

At 2:52 p.m., dispatchers received calls from people in south Maui who reported seeing smoke rising from Kahoolawe. A Maui Fire Department helicopter pilot confirmed about 15 acres of brush and kiawe on fire and another helicopter was dispatched to assist in dropping water on the fire.

The fire, which was found to have started by a vehicle’s catalytic converter, was fully contained by 6:20 p.m.

Shortly before 4 p.m., firefighters were called to another brush fire near Baldwin Park in Paia.

A crew from Paia and a Kahului water tanker were able to bring the one-acre fire under control by 4:15 p.m. The fire was fully extinguished by 4:46 p.m.

The cause of the fire was not determined.
