Pedestrian killed by car Friday died of blunt force trauma
A Ford Explorer SUV was towed away for evidence on Wilder Ave in Makiki on Friday afternoon. The SUV was driven by a 71 year old woman who fatally struck a 68-year-old woman in the crosswalk at Wilder Ave. and Makiki St.
A Makiki woman died Monday of a blunt force trauma as a result of a motor vehicle accident, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
Edna Funayama, 68, died of injuries from an accident in Makiki Friday, the medical examiner said Monday.
She was the first traffic death of the new year.
Funayama, a pedestrian, was struck by a car at the intersection of Makiki Street and Wilder Avenue.
She was crossing Wilder at 12:41 p.m. fronting St. Clement’s Episcopal Church when she was hit by a white 2005 Ford Explorer driven by a 71-year-old Kailua woman. Police said the vehicle hit Funayama as the driver was making a left turn onto Wilder.
She was in a marked crosswalk.
The victim was taken with head and internal injuries to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she died.
A friend said Funayama was on her way home, a few blocks away from the scene of the accident, when she was struck.
Excessive speed and alcohol were not suspected as factors, police said.
