Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton points to a supporter after she is introduced by Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), left. before she speak to a crowd at the Jim Clyburn Fish Fry, on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at the Charleston Visitor Center in Charleston, S.C.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is clearly the most popular candidate for president among Hawaii voters early in the 2016 election season, with 35 percent of those surveyed saying they would cast their ballot for her if the election were held today, according to a new Hawaii Poll.

Bernie Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont and a longtime democratic socialist, appears to have a bit more support locally than Republican billionaire Donald Trump, but Sanders and Trump each have only about one-third of the followers that Clinton has among Hawaii voters, the poll found.

The field of Republican candidates other than Trump, including Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, barely registered with local voters, displaying low levels of support that were within or only slightly beyond the margin of error for the poll.

The Hawaii Poll, conducted by Ward Research Inc. Dec. 28-Jan. 9 on cellphones and landlines, included 619 registered voters statewide. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.9 points.

The poll suggests that while many voters nationally are embracing nontraditional candidates such as Trump and Sanders, Hawaii’s dominant Democrats are taking a more cautious approach to what has been a turbulent lead-up to the 2016 presidential campaign.

Clinton supporter Robert Stender said he is a lifelong Democrat who voted for Republicans only twice in his life, and said he respects Clinton’s experience. The former first lady also served as a U.S. senator from New York.

Stender, 78, said he knows politicians don’t always keep their promises, but he holds the view that “even if Hillary is lying, she’s basically like me, her thoughts are liberal,” he said. “If she is the nominee I’m going to vote for her because her thinking is more towards my thinking.”

Stender said he’s no longer certain that Clinton will prevail in the primary, but added that “whoever it is, if it’s a Democrat, then I’m going to vote for the Democrat.”

Wailuku, Maui, resident Romeo Yanos said he supports Donald Trump, in large part because he agrees with Trump’s proposal to deport undocumented or illegal immigrants.

Yanos, 52, said he and his family emigrated from the Philippines, with his father arriving first, and the rest of the family following a decade later in 1976. “There’s a big difference between legal and illegal,” he said. “We did it the proper way.”

“Give him a chance,” Yanos said of Trump. “If it doesn’t work, then at least he tried. Then the people can vote for another president.”

Clinton was the top pick for president for 52 percent of the respondents who said they usually vote Democratic, and is more popular among women than men.

She is also most popular among Japanese-American voters, who have long been the backbone of the Hawaii electorate. Democratic Clinton also polls better among voters who are 35 years old and older.

Trump, meanwhile, was the favorite candidate for 22 percent of the voters who usually vote Republican, making him the most popular candidate among Republican-leaning voters. He was significantly more popular among men than among women.

Sanders was the most popular candidate among Hawaii voters younger than 35 years old.

While the poll results reflect Hawaii voters’ preferences, most Hawaii voters will have little say over who the Hawaii Democrats or Republicans actually select as their preferred candidates.

The Hawaii Democratic Party will hold a presidential preference poll on March 26 to decide which candidate will get the Hawaii party’s support, but that voting is an internal party affair open only to card-carrying Democrats.

Those Democratic Party gatherings are usually attended by only a tiny fraction of the state’s voters, although the 2008 campaign of Hawaii-born Barack Obama generated a surge of participation in the Democratic caucuses that year.

The Hawaii Democratic Party will send 34 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, which will be held July 25-28. Some of those delegates will be uncommitted to any particular candidate, while others will be committed to specific candidates based on those candidates’ showings in the March 26 presidential preference poll.

On the Republican side, the Hawaii GOP will hold presidential caucuses on March 8, and registered voters who sign up for the Republican Party and attend will be able to pick their favorites. A presidential preference poll will determine which candidates are allocated 16 of the 19 Hawaii delegates to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland July 18-21.

CORRECTION: The Hawaii GOP presidential preference poll on March 8 will determine which candidates are allocated 16 of the 19 Hawaii delegates to the national convention. A Page A1 story Sunday said one winner would receive 16 delegates.

Are you kidding me???? This shows you how skewed The Hawaii Poll is toward the donor class of the dem party. Most local dems I know feel the Bern. Just like the GOPe, the party is disregarding how the base feels.

    • palani says:

Hillary, the soon to be indicted candidate, lol! The other old white person, Bernie Sanders, will more likely be the choice of Hawaii voters. Party of diversity my arse.

      • Boots says:

I hope you are right. Go Bermie. We need a pinko commie for a change. Sadly Hillary wants to be coronated which is just not done in the democratic party.

        • Rite80 says:

If Bernie doesn’t win Hawaii’s support expect him to bring lawsuit claiming he is a victim.

        • Cellodad says:

I, at this point, don’t know for whom I will vote Boots but I suggest that you might want to educate yourself about the difference between a Social Democrat in the Northern European sense and a “pinko commie.” Buddy, it’s been a half century since the 50s and 60s. Time to move on.

        • Boots says:

Cellodad, just trying to add a little humor to the conversation. I know what the difference is but people on the right generally feel anyone not aligned with the wacko right is a pinko commie.

        • Cellodad says:

          Gotcha Boots. Point taken 🙂

        • scuddrunner says:

The difference was between a democrat and a socialist is, a socialist is they will tell you when they are taking your money.

    • mikethenovice says:

Hint. We tried the rest and am now with the best. Come and join us,…ward.

    • allie says:

Hillary is deeply flawed as a person and candidate and her apparent slavery to Israel’s interests seems to mirror the Republican servitude. But her domestic policies seem reasonable. The Republican slate is a terrifying. Hard to imagine any of them having control over our vast nuclear artillery. Their hatred of America also scares me. No, we will be voting Hillary just to defend ourselves from further pain.

      • Boots says:

How is Hillary flawed as a person and candidate? Sadly most candidates will be a slave to Israel.

        • Winston says:

How you ask? Happy to enlighten:

She is a compulsive, reflexive liar. No can tell truth. If given choice between true/false, picks false every time.\

The buck never stops with Hillary. In Benghazi testimony she was flat out proud that not a single peep about the security problems/risk there got to her desk. Not responsible because, you see, “I know nothing”, the Sgt Schultz defense.

She blew the Sec. State gig, big time. In case you haven’t noticed the whole freaking world is on fire due to US foreign policy weakness –china running amok, Russia reheating the cold war, the Middle East!?!!! Clue:The Sec State has something to do with foreign policy. Can’t blame it all on Pres. EmptySuitPantsOnFire.

She defines hipocrisy: Yes sir, Hillary, the great defender of women’s rights— who facilitated hubby Bill’s serial sexual harrassments and worse, a woman who rose on HIS merits, not hers.

Personality? a human bobble head. Nuf said.

Influence peddling/borderline graft: Now let’s put two and two together. While Secy of State, having power over foreign affairs, hubby Bill rakes in millions in speaker fees from foreign countries and so does the “Clinton Foundation”. See the connection? Come on you can do it. (hint: two plus 2 equals more than three, less than five).

My favorite: Clinton’s massive exposure of classified info (over 1,300 emails and counting) to any pimply faced hacker willing to spend 5 minutes, not to mention the numerous foreign governments who hate us. Not only did she do that with out a la de da, she fought disclosure of WHAT classified info was released, doing further damage. But what was I thinking. By dragging this whole email thing out, she just might be able to sew up the nomination before the real national security damage is revealed—you go girl. Meanwhile, in the irony department, the director of the CIA is fired for mishandling classified info, yet it appears you democrats are ready to coronate one of your own who commits a similar crime.

        • scuddrunner says:

What “really” happened in Benghazi? She knows she doesn’t want to incriminate, aka: go to jail. When Hillary was Sec of State she would fly to different countries to meet with officials who wanted “favors” from the US. Hillary knew her husband Bill would be flying in right behind her for “speaking engagements.” These countries would pay Bill hundreds of thousands of dollars to “seal the deal” with Hillary, our Sec of State……….Time and time again it’s all about her. States like Hawaii vote along party no mater who’s running…..If Hillary was a civilian she’d be locked up in Federal prison for life. Check out the “Clinton Foundation,” that’s another can of worms. She is the lowest form of life there is. Hawaii voters keep those blinders on……

        • bumbai says:

The first thing that comes to mind is the pathological lying thing.

        • allie says:

Can’t any candidate put American interests ahead of Israel and Saudi Arabia? Neither country cares about us at all and both are hideous and dangerous countries.

      • noheawilli says:

There is so much wrong with Clinton in any office. The private email account, the foundation that gets millions from shady interests, and her “what difference does it make” policy stance make her by far the worst of any party’s candidates. People seriously rethink your support of this woman.

        • Winston says:

Sorry to report, but “serious rethinking” isn’t going to happen among Hillary Clinton’s supporters.

        • Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

Hillary supporters need to get their heads examined. Email scandal and her incompetence in Bengazhi should disqualify her.

        • Boots says:

I have my disagreements with Hillary but these are not them. I am tired of hearing about her email. If she has actually done something wrong, I am sure it will work itself through the legal system. Have you forgotten Christie? He is probably my choice for being worst candidate.

      • Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

Allie, do you really want a deeply flawed person as your President?

        • Boots says:

Hillary is hardly a deeply flawed person. Deeply flawed persons are on the republican side.

        • allie says:

no but what choice do I have. Republicans like Cruz terrify me.

        • scuddrunner says:

allie, the politicians care about lining their pockets, and how far can they can fly the wings off Air force 1 at taxpayers expense. I believe in Trump. Yes he says some waco things but I really think he will make america great again. Yes, its a gamble.

      • mikethenovice says:

allie should think instead of just following the other lemmings, here. Or does she just want to see her name lighting up with this comment?

    • Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

This poll is not an accurate indication of Hawaii voters.

    • pilot16 says:

Locals will vote for Hillary of course, no news here. But the number of younger people that desire Bernie Sanders is disconcerting. They want free everything and their vision of their own future is pretty dismal. They prefer the promises of Sanders a self admitted socialist. For those of you who want to re-re-define what a socialist is, good luck with that. Even Hillary couldn’t even figure out how to answer the simple question in her latest interview on TV, “Whats the difference between a socialist and a democrat?” Cradle to grave care and promises to those who keep giving the public all that free stuff they want. Doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s all the same thing, no matter what the table. You guys go out and work hard, I’ll sit right here and play on my computer and drink beer. Just make sure my benefits check isn’t late again.

  2. danji says:

Dayton did you think a poll would show otherwise? Hawaii is a one party state. All things done my opinion is that Clinton should have bee our president for the past seven years. Obama is all air and has done nothing to be proud of accomplishing. Also the claim of being the first black president is also a fallacy cause isn’t he only half black?? It is time US people elect a female president . Seven years ago voters just voted for q black rather than a female.

    • Boots says:

lol, Obama has done a lot, certainly a lot more than any republican would have. As for Hillary, I said at the time that there really is very little difference between Hillary and Obama. I like Obama as he believes in negotiations. We probably would be at war with Iran today if we had a republican president.

      • Winston says:

Chuckle. You are a virtual non sequitur machine.

        • Boots says:

Notice you didn’t deny that we would be at war with Iran if we had a republican president.

        • Winston says:

Didn’t mention the obvious, that the “war with Iran” is yet another Obama straw man, “my way or the apocalypse”, so weak.

      • allie says:

Republicans want war as that will please Israel who owns them. But they will send your children and grandchildren to war. Not their own. Think Bush…

        • scuddrunner says:

The democrats are going to get us nuked. How do you like the fact that North Korea will be using Hawaii for target practice. It’s just a matter of time till they get it right. Are you willing to take the risk? I know your voting democrat.

  3. scuddrunner says:

Does it really matter? By the time the polls are closing in the mid west the winner has already been determined.

    • kekelaward says:

The party in power for the last 50 years should have been trying to change the rules so Hawaii could vote the day before the rest of the nation…4 electoral votes aren’t going to change the way the rest of the nation votes, As it is now, our votes don’t matter in the least.

      • Boots says:

lol, are you Gene Ward by chance? He wanted to move the date line so that we would be closer to Japan and China in terms of time. That would have made us first state in the nation to vote.

    • scuddrunner says:

Hawaii is the state that doesn’t vote. What is it 40% of the registered 700,000 voters vote and those are retirees.1.4 million people live in Hawaii.

    • Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

      True. Hawaii votes don’t count.

  4. mikethenovice says:

Even my puppy dogs will be behind Hillary’s leadership.

    • d_bullfighter says:

blindly loyal like most Dem voters

    • Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

Hillary’s terrible leadership got those people killed in Benghazi. And lying to the families of the deceased is utterly disgraceful.

      • Cellodad says:

Uh, and how many people did W’s sins of omission and commission get killed? Some of these folks were people I knew and whose families I know. As I’ve said before, I don’t like Republicans, Democrats, nor Libertarians. I don’t like the party system any more than did George Washington in his Farewell Address. I do believe however, there is plenty of blame to go around. Perhaps it’s time to just move on. (BTW: I’m a yondan in Wado-Ryu, a shodan in Shotokan, and a nidan in Uyeshiba Aikido but I think it’s kind of unseemly hubris to advertise the fact in my screen name.)

        • scuddrunner says:

Cell, Vote Trump. Do you think he’s a politician?

        • Cellodad says:

Two propositions there Scud. The second: Do I think he’s a politician? No, I don’t think he would ascribe that status to himself but the fact that he’s running for the nomination for President belies that. It’s moot. The first: I don’t even like his TV shows. Why on earth would I vote for a venomous ideologue with no thoughts other than pandering to the lowest common denominator in the US? I’m a blond Caucasian and lately, he makes me feel guilty to say so lest people lump me with the trash he espouses.

        • Boots says:

As for the Donald, I will say two good things about him which makes him the best republican running. This is not saying much. I like the fact that he does not wrap himself in God and he is the only republican I know of who is willing to tax at least some of the rich. (Hedge fund managers)

      • Boots says:

Did you complain when GW was president and something like 90 people were killed in similar situations? Oh, they were not American so who cares?

  5. keakoa says:

    Now, how dumb is that?

  6. cojef says:

Flabbergasted at what the polls indicate. Guess the slate of choices are just so, so, thus the results. Am fed up with the belt-way politician that are driving this great country into the ground. Started voting back in the mid 50’s in Indiana and was very satisfied with the caliber of candidates. However around the 70’s witnessed the gradually decline of ethical political process. It has never improved, if anything it has gotten worse.

    • Boots says:

Hawaii used to have a high voter turn out. We had leaders like the young Inouye, Sparky and Pink Mink. It seems though that as voter turnout has fallen the quality of candidates has also fallen? Or perhaps it is just my imagination.

      • butinski says:

Not your imagination. With current wannabees llke Kirk and Ernie and Mufi, who cares anymore? However, the rail project issue will create a little more excitement. Where is Rod Tam? Zippys needs more business.

  7. Hawaii_Libertarian says:

The 2016 Hawaii GOP Presidential Caucus is March 8, not the 9th as the article states. See http://gophawaii.com/?page_id=822. Too bad the SA continues to make big mistakes in facts of its coverage of important issues.

  8. sluggah says:

    Baaaaa, sheeple

  9. Boots says:

I am not surprised that Hillary is leading but this is really not relevant. Hawaii has a caucus system so who turns out determines who will win. Sadly a very small percentage actually vote in Hawaii’s caucuses. I remember one year where the republicans nominated Pat Robinson and the democrats almost nominated Jessie Jackson. People should attend these caucuses and vote. But will they? Probably not.

  10. Oahuan says:

Blind sheeps, Hawaii has a lot of them. All they see is the D at the back of the candidates name and that’s all they need. Hillary? Seriously?

  11. soundofreason says:

Baser on her…accomplishments? What are those, exactly?

    • seaborn says:

What are accomplishments of any of the Republican contenders? Besides signing with Grover Norquist to obstruct President Obama on every issue, what have any of the Republican contenders, that have actually served in office, done in the past 7 – 8 years? Of the Republican contenders that have held no office, what are their accomplishments that should put them as leader of the United States? You can buy a shovel at City Mill to attempt to dig up something worthwhile, but you should probably rent a backhoe, as your task may take a while.

      • Winston says:

Let’s see, Cruz was solicitor general of the state of Texas and argued cases before Supreme Court–Better than Obama’s creds.

Rubio: Speaker of the Florida House–Exceeds Obama

Trump: Crazy, but still a successful business man.

The Governors (Christie, Huckaby, Bush, and Kasich) have all been successful leaders of state government.

Now, Clinton’s stellar accomplishments: Rode her husband’s coat tail, blew the Sec State gig— it’s a short list.

        • Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

All these candidates are better than Hillary. America can’t afford the same Obama administration under Hillary.

        • Boots says:

Yes Jiujitsu_Fighter, these candidates are better than Hillary if you are a supporter of Bin Laden. lol What people cannot afford is a return to Voodoo economics.

        • wilikitutu says:

Clinton’s job at state is the most important job in the administration. None of these bozos have ever done anything that compares to that.

        • poipoo says:

Clinton is a warmonger who did nothing in her position as Sec of State, except to cause more chaos in the Middle East & Libya, contributing to the rise of ISIS

  12. scuddrunner says:

I’m voting Trump! I know he’s not perfect but I know Hillary can be bought out. She’s no friend of the US. Trump is crazy enough that other countries will listen.

  13. Winston says:

From the following summary of polls on Clinton’s favorability rating, the rest of the country sees something that Hawaii democrats are evidently missing:

    FAVORABLE UNFAVORABLE

    AP-GfK (web): 41 48 Unfavorable +7
    Morning Consult: 47 46 Favorable +1
    NBC/WSJ: 39 48 Unfavorable +9
    Emerson College
    Polling Society: 42 55 Unfavorable +13
    CNN: 46 50 Unfavorable +4
    Morning Consult: 44 51 Unfavorable +7
    YouGov/Economist: 43 49 Unfavorable +6
    ABC/Post: 47 49 Unfavorable +2
    CBS: 33 53 Unfavorable +20
    Morning Consult: 42 53 Unfavorable +11

You fellows better be praying she’s indicted for the email business and drops out, because, with her high unfavorable ratings, almost any one of the republicans running will clean her clock. Do you think she’ll be able to turn this around based on her winning personality? This is a self-answering question. You folks are in a box, having no alternative but a Berned out old socialists who would happily quadruple our national debt. Best of luck.

  14. Charliegrunt says:

I cannot imagine anyone who has served in the military or has had a family member serve in the military voting for someone who left for four people “hanging out to dry”. With her as President, she would rather got to bed, than send help to those whose lives are in jeopardy. Well, what can you expect from a woman whose husband is a draft dodger.

  15. Kuokoa says:

Of course the passive aggressive Hawaiians would vote for a Jezebel.

  16. tploomis says:

Fortunately Hawaii voters have more sense than deluded Honolulu Star Advertiser commenters.

  17. juke says:

may God have mercy on hawaii.he who has eyes let them see .they who have ears let them hear.thoses who have a mind of there own use it.the rest of you get what you vote for.

  18. stanislous says:

When ask: “What is the difference between the Democrat Party and Communism?” Hillary could not answer… Question: can anyone answer that question for me please?

    • Boots says:

What is the difference between the republican party and communism? Both believe in big government where government runs the lives of individual citizens. The days of Reagan who said government is the problem are gone. Today republicans consistently call for more government. I see little difference between them.

      • serious says:

And, you are saying that in a State, that has been dominated by the Democratic Party for 60 years and according to the SA article has NINE AND A HALF TIMES more levels of bureaucracy than the average state is caused by the ONE “R” senator in our legislature?????

  19. mikethenovice says:

Even the worst Democrat is better than the best Republican.

    • tsboy says:

the worst democrat is right. a socialist and a liar. wow. is this really America anymore if you want to make a socialist our president? at 3:00am in Bengazhi, where was Hillary? the world is on fire because of her and Obama. these two cannot even criticize each other or say Muslim extremists for fear of offending some voters. no guts. thats not who i want running this country. its not really about democrats and republicans to me. its about preserving our values and traditions as Americans. there are a lot of people on the left who want to change all of that.

  20. fiveo says:

The party loyalists will vote for Hillary if she is the democratic nominee because this is what they do.
I do hope they will have a change of heart after Hillary is indicted and will no longer be able to run.

    • Boots says:

They will also vote for her because the republicans do not offer anything. The republican party is basically like the communist party. They desire big government and people should just keep quiet and pay pay and pay some more.

  21. FluidMotion says:

These are the same Hawaii voters who voted for the rail. If the candidate is corrupt and ridden with scandal, Hawaii voters are all in!

  22. Ronin006 says:

Hawaii’s dominant Democrats are NOT taking a more cautious approach to what has been a turbulent lead-up to the 2016 presidential campaign. Fact of the matter is that most Hawaii Democrats do not have the foggiest idea about what is happening in the presidential campaign nor do they know the positions each candidate may have regarding various issues. Most are politically blind or indifferent and will vote for anyone who claims to be a Democrat without know why.

  23. WizardOfMoa says:

Most of the Posters here have quite legitimate view of the best candidate for president! Majority doesn’t seem to think its Clinton! A point of view this old buck doesn’t dispute! Let’s hope the majority of voters agree too! Alas, there’s no other potential candidate, outside the field of clowns, capable to become the next leader of the free world .

  24. wilikitutu says:

    Hillary in 2016…

  25. Wazdat says:

Not surprised at all. No Hilary, enough of Bush and clintons

  26. matthew56 says:

Just goes to show how uneducated the typical Hawaii voter is. After all, we ended up with Ige instead of Aiona and he wants to welcome terrorist refugees when we can’t even take care of the existing homeless. Democrats have had 30-40 years to get it right in Hawaii and they still can’t lead properly. But with the unions in their pocket and people aren’t smart enough to research a candidate or they will vote D since that mommy and daddy always did or their union tells them to, this is what we get. Hillary can’t be trusted, yet people will still vote for her since she is a liberal so that makes her lies and inexperience ok?? She’s not even smart enough to handle an email account properly and you want to give her keys to our nuclear weapons?

  27. saywhatyouthink says:

Not surprising at all, the same voters that elect the corrupt Dems year after year in Hawaii will vote for Clinton. At least Bernie would serve the people with integrity, Clinton not so much.

  28. wn says:

Polls are just what they are and may an may not reflect votes cast, hence what was shard by the 600+ polled…who knows. Personally, I will be disappointed if the results of the polls represent the population of the Hawaii community, then again, it really depends on voter turn out which may not really reflect the true sentiment of our community…alast!

  29. kailuaboys says:

Deeply disturbing that anyone would vote for Hilary. The evidence is clear, to anyone who observes it objectively. She lied to the families of people killed in Ben Ghazi. She doesn’t qualify to lead our nation.

  30. iwanaknow says:

If Mrs. Clinton had won in 2008 and again in 2012……where would we be today?

  31. 78R8R says:

She belongs in JAIL not the White House. Way worse than Obama and that’s pretty BAD for the NATION!!!
