By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

A 76-year-old tourist from Oregon has died following a two-car collision in Kapaa this afternoon, Kauai County police report.

The man was a passenger in a PT Cruiser that attempted to enter the north-bound lanes of Kuhio Highway from the shoulder near the Kaiakea fire station. A Ford truck, traveling north on the highway, hit the driver’s side of the car shortly before 2 p.m., police said.

Paramedics took the man, in critical condition, and a 71-year-old woman driving the PT Cruiser  to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The woman is reported in stable condition.

The 62-year-old man driving the truck was not injured.

Police closed Kuhio Highway in both directions for more than two hours while police conducted their investigation and crews worked to clear the roadway.

Both lanes reopened just before 5 p.m.

This is Kauai’s first traffic fatality for the year.
