Minaj, Carey leaving 'American Idol'

LOS ANGELES >> Nicki Minaj is following Mariah Carey out the door on "American Idol."

The hip-hop diva announced Thursday on Twitter that it is "time to focus on the music."

Fox and "Idol" producer FremantleMedia say in a statement that they wish her the best.

Minaj became a new judge on the Fox talent competition last year along with Carey and Keith Urban. Minaj and Carey bickered on the show, creating a feud that was uncomfortable for both viewers and contestants.

Carey announced earlier today that she wasn't coming back to "Idol" so she can focus on her upcoming tour.

"Idol" veteran judge Randy Jackson announced ahead of the 12th season finale that he is also leaving the show.

I wonder why nikki did not perform on the show? This is usually why they accept these judge jobs, to promote their careers.

I hate to admit it but I watch this show because I do find it entertaining and enjoy rooting for my favorite. I don't think that AI is coming to an end any time soon. Even on a low the show still brings in more viewers than most shows on tv. The networks are about making the most money for the show and AI. Given that today's viewers are used to a lot of things going on in shows, they will need to evolve to make the show fresher over time. One of the things that is used to do this is to add variations that shake things up a bit. One thing that AI could do is to maybe go to the old three judge panel but add a guest judge each week. The guest judge could be any singer that is current or is considered a legend. Others might want to see a celebrity that may not necessarily be a singer but a someone from a different perspective such as an actor/artist that enjoys music. One could even have a celebrity chef who is really into music such as Nadia G from the Cooking Channel. She would be ideal as she does do singing skits on her cooking show. If I were one of the producers of the show, I would go out of my way to hire her as one of the regular judges due to her comic sense. Niki Minaj was simply not a good choice of a judge because of her grating personality. Of course, this is just my opinion. I could never understand why they chose her because she is a mediocre rapper and her singing is not great. Again, this is just my opinion. After all, I am not a professional singer so I cannot give a professional review of her. I am just a consumer that enjoys the show. A consumer that will watch the show and its commercials because that is the bottom line. AI producers know that they want a country singer as a judge so they will automatically have a country music star as a judge. That's just a demographics kind of thing. There are a lot of country music lovers and viewers of the show as can be seen in the successes of the country singing contestants winning the contest. But they need to add variety in judges. They will need a pop perspective much like what Mariah did for the show. They might also want a rock perspective. It would be interesting to see who the readers thing would fill these spots. It would have to be artists that are very good as critics and entertaining. I was surprised that Lady Gaga was not chosen instead of Niki Minaj. Lady Gaga was, after all, a guest coach for the singers at one time. She seems to have the right personality for the job. I am not a fan of Lady Gaga but she does show the understanding that an artist needs to be a judge of the show. They also need one judge to fill what Simon Cowell filled in very well as the judge who will cut no corners in his critiques. Harry Connick fills that bill perfectly. I would be surprised if they did not sign him. One artist that I would really love to see as a judge and would fill the pop and rock spectrum is Randy Jackson's former colleague in Journey (Jackson was a temporary bassist for that band) Steve Perry. He would bring in a lot of fans who have not seen their favorite rock singer in a long while and he obviously does not have a gig at the moment. Steve Perry is considered an icon in the rock singing business. Signing Mr. Perry would automatically give AI credibility as a singing competition. Mariah's leaving take away a lot of the credibility from the show. Keith Urban was a great judge on the show as his critiques have been mostly very good. Unfortunately, his presence is between good to very good. They need someone to light a fire underneath the contestants and to entertain the viewers as well. Prince would be a great judge and would draw more viewers but I don't know how he would react to the cameras as he has a reputation of being strange at times. But if AI could sign him they would bring in the viewers that made him a big seller. Fox could use their stars from their other popular shows such as the Big Bang to do guest judging. I don't know why they don't do that as they have a treasure trove of great stars who I think will make great judges. In that direction I would bring in the judges from So You Think You Can Dance. That would help that show by exposing the AI viewers to the judges of that other show. Although I am not a fan of the WWE for what it shows to our younger viewers in the form of violence, I would not be surprised if they sign WWE stars to be guest judges. That would be an automatic win for the show given that shows popularity and viewership.
