2 arrests made in death of bullied Florida girl

By Associated Press

POSTED:

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) — Two girls have been arrested in the death of a 12-year-old central Florida girl who authorities say committed suicide after being bullied online for nearly a year.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd has scheduled a news conference Tuesday morning in Winter Haven regarding the arrests of the girls, who are 12 and 14.

According to the sheriff’s office, the girls are charged with felony aggravated stalking.

Authorities have said Rebecca Sedwick was “terrorized” by as many as 15 girls who ganged up on her and picked on her for months through online message boards and texts.

Authorities say that on Sept. 9, Rebecca climbed a tower at an abandoned concrete plant and hurled herself to her death.

Kids nowadays are so mean and vicious. Were we like that growing up in the 50's and 60's?

Yes we were. However, cellphones and internet take bullying to extremes. Kids are so addicted to social connection. One way not to be bullied online is NOT to log onto the social networks AND screen your phone calls/texts. Don't answer or read unfriendly messages!

Its the internet. These people probably aren't as vicious in person. its the relative anonymity that is provided by the internet. One only has to look at the average comments section to see its not just kids, unfortunately.

Yep. The Republicans want to cut the budget to provide for a safer community by not allowing the rich to pay their fair share of taxes that will be used to hire more police and security.

It is in poor taste to marginalize this subject by politicizing it as you did. It is rather disrespectful to the victim and others like her who suffer such abuse daily. Oh and FYI both parties have your best interests in mind, as far as it fits in with their agenda. An example is the local democratic party wanting to oust those who don't stick with the party line, much like the national republican party trying to oust those not "conservative" enough. So please, don't allow politics to hijack what is an important subject.

Suspects are dealt with too much leniency e.g probation, counseling sessions, coummunity service which becomes a joke.....i don't care how old the suspects but they must be dealt with severely and not with just a slap on the hand.

She never told an adult for over a year. What's up with that? The parents should have picked up on the non verbal body language. You can't hide body language.

mike, not all kids share their feelings with their parents. I never did. No, not all parents pick up on nonverbal body language. Some parents don't care. Some kids hide their feelings well. I could've been that kid 50 years later.

There are other sites that have posted the tweets of the arrested girls. These girls bragged about bullying her and even gloated over the fact that she committed suicide. So incredibly sad.
