An approaching weather system is bringing high winds to Lanai, parts of Hawaii island and mountain summits, generating advisory-level surf on east shores and bringing unsettled weather to all islands today.

The heaviest rain will likely be on Maui and the Big Island, which could also see snow on the summits. But there's a 40 percent chance of rain in Honolulu today.

The cold overnight weather is likely over for now. Temperatures are expected to be about 65 to 74 degrees tonight in Honolulu with a high of 75 to 80 degrees today.

A low pressure system northeast of Hawaii island is generating strong winds to Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, where there is a high wind warning until 4 p.m. today because of 50 to 65 mph winds with gusts over 80 mph.

A wind advisory is in effect for parts of Lanai, including Lanai City and Manele; Haleakala above 6,000 feet on Maui; South Kona, North and East Kohala, Kailua-Kona, Milolii, South Point, Pahala, Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Kamuela, Waikoloa, Bradshaw Field and Saddle Road above 5,000 feet.

Northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph with 50 mph gusts are possible until about 4 p.m. today. Haleakala could see 45 mph winds with 60 mph gusts.

Those winds are also generating a trade wind swell on east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island, where a high surf advisory until 6 a.m. Thursday.

The weather system northeast of the Big Island that brought thunder storms and hail to Oahu Sunday and Monday is expected to move back over the state starting today.

Oahu may get more rain this weekend as the weakened weather system continues to move west and stalls near Kauai. The system could also bring Kona winds and vog this weekend.

Winds will become light Thursday and Friday and become southerly on Saturday.

There's a 50 percent chance of rain and the chance of thunder storms Friday and Saturday in Honolulu.
