Rescue crews stay busy on North Shore

Ocean Safety officials rescued several people from waters around Oahu's North Shore Saturday, a Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman said.

First, rescuers on a personal watercraft assisted two surfers to shore around 2:35 p.m. off Mokuleia. They did not require further treatment.

Then around 3:15 p.m., a woman in her 20s was washed off the rocks at Shark's Cove. She was able to get out of the water without the assistance of lifeguards but sustained scratches and cuts and was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

A short time later around 3:40 p.m., two women ran into trouble swimming outside Three Tables on the Haleiwa side of Shark's Cove. Swimmers who were already in the water tried to help them, but another wound up needing assistance. Lifeguards and Honolulu firefighters assisted the three swimmers to shore and paramedics responded, but the patients refused transport.

Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the public needs to be reminded that winter is a very dangerous time of year for water activities on the North Shore because waves could wash people off of rocks and ledges without warning.
