Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is warning about telephone and email scams targeting KIUC customers.
Commercial customers have told KIUC that they received telephone calls from a person warning them that their electric bill was past due and that they would have to place a wire transfer of money immediately or their power would be shut off, according to a news release from KIUC.
KIUC officials said the utility does not initiate calls to customers about late bills nor does KIUC request wire transfers.
Similar calls were reported in April 2013. In addition, KIUC customer was targeted in an email scam in January 2013.
KIUC warned its customers not to provide personal, confidential or financial information to anyone when responding to unsolicited phone calls or emails.
KIUC said anyone with questions should call the utility at 246-4300 or the Kauai Police Department at 241-1711.
