Lifeguards performed 22 rescues and took nearly 1,450 preventative actions on Saturday as high surf pounded the north and west shores of Oahu.

In one incident, a pair of lifeguards used paddleboards to reach two 24-year-old men who were caught in 30- to 35-foot surf in the “Backyards” surf spot on the North Shore. The lifeguards paddled the men to a safe area where other lifeguards on Jet Skis were able to pick them up and return them to shore.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

In all, Ocean Safety personnel performed five rescues and took 660 preventative actions on the North Shore. Lifeguards on the west side rescued 17 people and took 780 preventative actions, according to Ocean Safety spokeswoman Shayne Enright.

A high surf warning was in effect Saturday for the north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau, Molokai and the north shores of Maui.

Surf of 20 to 25 feet was forecast for the north shores, 10 to 12 feet for the west shores. The warning was set to expire at 6 a.m. Sunday.
