Hawaii senators grill state hospital administrator

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 04:52 a.m. HST, Apr 10, 2014

Lawmakers quizzed the acting Hawaii State Hospital administrator in a hearing to investigate accounts of violence and mismanagement at the facility.

State senators on Wednesday pushed William Elliott to explain hiring practices at the psychiatric hospital. They also questioned his qualifications for overseeing the hospital and probed possible nepotism in hiring.

Hospital workers have come forward in recent months with accounts of frequent violent attacks by patients. They've said that low staffing contributes to danger for workers at the hospital.

Elliott says there are about 60 full-time jobs that remain open at the hospital. He said most of those positions are covered by temporary hires through a staffing agency.

Elliott himself has been covering two administrative jobs at the hospital for more than a year.

This Elliot dude is just the acting administrator covering two jobs which means he is trying to do the admiistrator's job and his old job. Maybe the good Senators shuold be asking the Director of the State Department of Health why they have not filled the administrator's job and let this Ellit dude go back to his old job or have the top job and let him fill his old job. Either way the fact that they have had some guy doing two jobs for over a year speaks to some fairly ban management.

Go back to when Lingle was Governor, when the STATE started to downsize the population of the hospital due to lack of funding. When that lady was in charge, on PAPER it sounded real good about the reduction of housed patients at the hospital and moving these very patients out into society. (notice how the increase of homeless people coincided with the decrease of hospitalized patients!) BLAME THE STATE !!!!!! less patients , less staff!!!! reduce the COST of operating at ANY EXPENSE!!! DON'T BLAME THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATOR BLAME THE VERY POLITICIANS THAT IS TRYING TO PUT THE BLAME ON HIM NOW!!!!

This has been going on for years. The State of Hawaii Adult Mental Health System is absolutely inept and negligent. And the blame can't all fall on Linda Lingle. Neil has been governor since December 2010 and still nothing has been fixed within the AMHD system.
