Fire rescue personnel airlift 2 visitors from Mount Olomana

Fire rescue personnel airlifted two 22-year-old Florida women Tuesday night from Mount Olomana.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman David Jenkins said the hikers were on the third peak of Olomana, a high-level hike.

Based on misinformation from the Internet, the women thought there was an easy route down, Jenkins said.

They called the Fire Department at 7:42 p.m. and firefighters were on scene at 7:47 p.m. A fire helicopter picked them up, one by one, using a rescue sling.

"They got way out of their league," Jenkins said.

"Be aware of the trail you're hiking on," he advised. "Be aware of your skill level and the trail, and don't believe everything on the Internet as far as trail information."

He added that rescues like this put firefighters and helicopter pilots in jeopardy.
