One of the vessels formerly used as the Hawaii Superferry will replace the Westpac Express based out of Okinawa, Japan, to transport Marines and equipment around the western Pacific.

Former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann is saying that if he’s elected as the next governor of Hawaii he will make it a priority to bring back the Superferry.

Hannemann said Wednesday that it will not be easy. But he says he will take a different approach than his predecessors.

The inter-island ferry ran from 2007 until 2009 and was plagued with problems. Protesters concerned about pollution and traffic even prevented the ferry from docking on Kauai.

Hannemann says the biggest mistake made last time was the decision to operate the ferry without completing an environmental impact report. He would ensure that an environmental report would be done. Hannemann would hold community meetings with prior opponents. He says community members have been asking for a return of the ferry.
