A Honolulu man jogging near the Kalihiwai Bridge on Kauai's north shore fell 40 feet and held on to a tree on the side of a cliff before he was rescued early Saturday morning, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

The 40-year-old man had been jogging on the makai side of the bridge at about 2:45 a.m. when he tripped and fell over the railing, said county spokeswoman Mary Daubert. She said the man used a cell phone to call a friend for help.

Firefighters from the Hanalei station responded and rescued the man, who had injured his left leg and shoulder.

Medics took him to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

Police closed Kuhio Highway from 3 to 4:45 a.m. while firefighters rescued the man.

He probably was going to use the bathroom and climbed over the side, not realizing he was on a bridge and fell.

That was my first thought too because the bridge has a high enough concrete barrier that prevents people and cars from falling over the side into the gorge below. All bridges in the United States are governed by AASHTO, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Bridges are there for a reason: to let motor vehicles cross a terrain that includes a huge dip in land, which is usually a river. Two Possibilities, as Harry Hoo of Get Smart fame played by the late Joey Forman, says for is near tragedy: (1) Honorable Jogger was afraid of a motor vehicle getting too close to him as he was jogging, or (2) Honorable Jogger stood on the bridge barrier and simply jumped down.

Then again the article says the 40-year old man tripped and fell over the bridge, which is possible if one is over a certain age, and if one is jogging at two forty five after midnight Hawaiian standard time.

How they knew he was there at that hour of the morning? He hung onto the branch with one hand and dialed 9-1-1 on his cell with the other? Or he hung on all night, what?

What is he doing jogging at that hour on a relatively narrow roadway?

Kalihiwai is remote area and cannot fathom what he was doing at that hour on a bridge and how he could fall off, unless he was inebriated and how he did get this far. Strange?

I don't think the roadway is a Narrow. It looks wide enough to carry big rigs. See how much space there is between the two yellow center lines and the warning square dots on the side.

Zombies are know to chase hapless joggers on the bridge. What I can't figure out is how the stumbling zombies can catch the swift-moving joggers. ???
