Forever 21 signs on for a new location in the Ka Makana Alii mall being built in Kapolei.

DeBartolo Development will break ground Thursday on its long-planned $500 million regional mall in Kapolei.

After a traditional Hawaiian blessing, the developer along with the landowner, the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, will mark the start of construction of Ka Makana Alii.

The first phase of the 1.4 million-square-foot West Oahu shopping center will include more than 750,000 square feet of retail, dining, entertainment and hotel space scheduled to be completed by late 2016.

The center’s list of confirmed tenants includes anchor department store Macy’s, as well as H&M, Forever 21, AT&T, Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, a Consolidated Theatres and Hawaii’s first Hampton Inn & Suites.

The project is expected to generate a solid revenue stream for DHHL through a 65-year lease and create an estimated 3,000 jobs during construction and 6,500 permanent full-time jobs.
