This satellite image taken Friday morning shows a band of rain clouds east of the Big Island and Maui, being blown towards the state by easterly tradewinds.

A band of rain clouds is expected to move up the island chain, bringing scattered showers late Friday afternoon to the Big Island and Maui, and to Oahu and Kauai Friday night into Saturday morning.

“When this is passing, we do expect an increase in showers,” Bob Burke, a meterologist with the National Weather Service Honolulu office, said Friday.

Most of the rains will fall on windward and mauka areas, but trade winds should be strong enough to blow some of the showers to leeward areas, Burke said.

“Today looks like it will be pretty dry (on Oahu),” he said. “But later tonight, maybe tomorrow morning, we can expect a few more showers.”

After the rain passes, the weather should return to the usual tradewinds that the islands have seen for the past couple of weeks.

The forecast for Saturday and Sunday calls for east winds of 15 to 20 mph, partly cloudy skies in windward and mauka areas with isolated showers. Leeward areas may also see some isolated showers. Highs are expected to be in the low- to mid-80s, with temperatures dropping to 69 to 74 degrees at night.

This weekend should bring a few waves for surfers.

A small northwest late season swell is expected on north and west shores. South shores are also seeing a small bump.

Wave faces on north shores are expected to be 5 to 7 feet tall, lowering to 3 to 5 feet Saturday. West shores expect 3- to 5-foot surf Friday, decreasing to 2 to 4 feet Saturday. East and south shores should see 2- to 4-foot surf through Saturday.

“There’s a little bit of surf out there for everybody,” Burke said.
