Work on resurrecting the dilapidated Coco Palms Hotel on Kauai is slated to get underway soon following approval on a number of permits.

LIHUE >> The long-shuttered Wailua resort made famous by Elvis Presley film "Blue Hawaii" is slated for demolition within the next 60 days.

The Garden Island reports that Honolulu-based redevelopment firm Coco Palms Hui says it is in the process of pulling demolition permits for the historic Coco Palms Resort.

The demolition is the first step toward revitalizing the hotel, which never reopened after Hurricane Iniki tore it apart in 1992.

Chad Waters of Coco Palms Hui says the entire resort is expected to open in 2017 as a Hyatt property. It will take an estimated $135 million to get it there.
