Maui firefighters rescue 2 paddleboarders unable to get back to shore

Maui firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel rescued a visiting Connecticut couple, who got into trouble while paddleboarding in the Kahana area of West Maui on Wednesday.

Fire officials said that at 11:19 a.m. Wednesday, the Maui Fire Department got a call that two stand-up paddleboarders were possibly in distress.

They got to the area, commonly called “S-Turns,” and saw the pair about 250 yards offshore.

Nearby fisherman watched the paddleboarders struggle for 30 minues to get back to shore, but when the paddleboarders failed to make progress, one of the fisherman called for help.

Ocean Safety officers used rescue watercraft and brought the man and woman back to shore. Neither of them were injured.

Ocean and wind conditions were not considered difficult, with winds lighter than normal at 10 mph.
