Missing hikers return from Laie trail

Two 18-year-old men, who were reported missing in the Koolaus since Monday, walked out on their own this morning uninjured, police said.

Five fire rescue personnel and the fire department’s helicopter began their search at 7 a.m., looking for Zeph McKee and Justice Royer who were overdue on the 12-mile Laie Summit Trail in the Koolau mountain range.

In a CrimeStoppers bulletin, police said McKee and Royer left the BYU-Hawaii campus to go hiking at the Laie Summit at 3 p.m. Monday.

McKee texted his father on the mainland stating that they would be back on campus by 7 p.m. Monday, but never showed up.

The trail connects to the Koolau Summit Trail on a ridge that sits between Ihihi and Kahanawainui gulches.
