The Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) is located in Kalihi.

The Department of Public Safety is tenting one of the modules at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in an effort to prevent the infestation of bedbugs.

Module 20 houses up to 120 work furlough inmates who leave and return from work daily. “It’s not uncommon for bedbugs to be brought back into the facility,” said the public safety department in a news release.

Tenting began Thursday and is scheduled to be completed Saturday. Work furlough inmates have been temporarily relocated to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center and are set to return to Module 20 Saturday night.

Preventative measures that include spraying and replacing mattresses and bedding have been taken in the past to address the issue.

“The health and well-being of our staff as well as the inmates is our top priority,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda in the news release. “Instead of waiting to see if spot treatment is working, our warden took preventative measures and ordered tenting to be done to keep the situation from turning into an infestation.”
