Boat troubles prompt rescue of 4 rowers

A Coast Guard helicopter rescued four people attempting to row from California to Hawaii.

The Coast Guard said Saturday that the rowers were participating in the Great Pacific Race when they reported taking water on board their 24-foot boat. High seas prevented a chase boat from taking on the rowers. The Coast Guard was called to help.

The rowers, who started June 7 from Monterey, were found about 75 miles west of San Luis Obispo at about 1 a.m. Pacific time Saturday. Three rowers were hoisted in the helicopter before it returned to land for refueling. It returned to pick up the remaining rower and a rescue swimmer who stayed with the boat.
