A pick 6 here, a blocked punt there and it seemed destiny was on Campbell’s side against powerhouse Leilehua last night.

Instead, the visiting Mules rallied from a 20-0 deficit for a 36-20 victory before 2,000 fans at the Sabers’ field.

With 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns by running back Blaine Furtado, No. 7 Leilehua improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West (2-1 overall).

Campbell, coming off an upset win at Waianae, fell to 1-1 in league play (2-2 overall) despite the fast start.

"I’m proud of our guys for not giving up when we were down 20-0," Mules coach Nolan Tokuda said.

It was a physical battle that led to injuries for both teams. Two Sabers were taken to the hospital with head injuries.

Despite an early lead, Campbell’s youth and inexperience on offense was no match for a shrewd, deceptive Leilehua defense. The Mules got sacks from Samson Zimmerman, Reece Acohido and Cornelius Fitiausi and limited Campbell quarterbacks to 98 passing yards.

"Leilehua does that stand-up thing. All we do is zone block, but we had a lot of missed assignments up front," Sabers coach Amosa Amosa said.

Acohido also recovered a fumble and Derek Cunningham had an interception.

Campbell had a 20-16 lead and the ball at the Leilehua 29-yard line late in the first half, but a holding call stifled the drive. Acohido’s sack also sent the Sabers backward, and the Mules followed with a touchdown drive in the final 1:05.

Allen Racette’s first catch of the game turned out to be clutch, a screen pass that caught Campbell off-guard. Racette’s 48-yard touchdown play gave Leilehua the lead for good, 23-20, with 6.1 seconds left in the first half.

The Mules, who rushed for 143 yards on 34 carries, went to the ground against a tiring Sabers defense. Furtado’s first touchdown, a 5-yard blast, capped a 10-play, 70-yard march, and the Mules led 30-20 with 9:33 to play.

With Leilehua’s defense in control, the offense added a 1-yard scoring run by Furtado on a sweep to cap the scoring at 36-20 with 4:55 remaining.

The first quarter had Saber fans on their feet. Sheldon Maae blocked a Fred Padrones punt and defensive tackle Isaiah Thompson gained possession in the back of the end zone to give the home team a 7-0 lead with 4:09 to go in the opening quarter.

Moments later, cornerback Jakob Pacheco intercepted a pass by Leilehua starter Kenan Sadanaga and took it 34 yards to paydirt for a 14-0 Campbell lead with 3:07 left in the first quarter.

A pick by Jyrell Umali continued the onslaught, and Jaelan Subio-Etrata hauled in a 19-yard fade pass from Justin Tago as Campbell cruised to a 20-0 lead with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.

Jordan Kalaau (18-for-28, 214 yards) took over at quarterback for the Mules and their fortunes reversed. He found Padrones for a 36-yard touchdown pass on fourth down.

After Umali, who also punts, lost the snap out of the end zone for a safety, the Mules were within 11 points.

Kalaau then scrambled for a 16-yard touchdown run to bring Leilehua within 20-16 with 6:45 to go in the first half.

Jerry Tanupo Jr.’s 65-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter was one of seven rushing touchdowns scored by the Marauders as Waipahu ran all over the visiting Falcons in an OIA White matchup. For the game, the Marauders had two rushers over 100-plus yards (Victor Moananu-134, Tanupo Jr.-128).

Jun Cho had 111 yards on the ground for the winless Falcons.
