Kim contributes to USC record

Former Maui resident Kyung Kim helped Southern California break a 14-year-old record Wednesday in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, in Athens, Ga. The Trojans shot a team total of 12-under-par 276 — one better than the previous low — and were the clubhouse leaders when bad weather ended play with half the 22 teams still on the course.

At 560, top-ranked USC is 12 shots up on defending champion Alabama.

Kim had 69 in the second round and is tied for 16th among the individuals who finished, at 143. Oregon sophomore Cassy Isagawa, the 2010 state high school champion for Baldwin, was even par through 17 holes. She opened with 75.

Two-time Manoa Cup champion David Fink, an Oregon State junior, fired a 5-under-par 67 in Saturday’s final round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. It was not quite enough as the Beavers came up a stroke short of advancing to the national championship.

Fink finished in a tie for fifth individually at 206 — a career low. He was two shots behind Richmond’s Daniel Walker, who will play in nationals because he was the top individual not on one of the qualifying teams.

Local Casper courses in special charity event

Bay View, Ka‘anapali and Puakea — the three Hawaii courses managed by Billy Casper Golf — will participate in the "World’s Largest Golf Outing" Aug. 12. The event, held at more than 100 courses nationwide, raises funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. Prizes will be given to the foursome with the lowest score and the one that raises the most money.

All participants are eligible for the grand prize, a trip for four to the Nike Campus in Beaverton, Ore., including airfare, hotel and custom-fit Nike irons.

Cost to enter is $40 at Bay View, $50 at Puakea and $99 for Royal Ka‘anapali.
