Honolulu police closed Kamehameha Highway for about two hours in both directions near Hauula following a head-on collision that seriously injured three people this afternoon.
The crash happened at about 2:15 p.m. fronting Kokololio Beach Park. Police reopened the road by 4:10 p.m.
An Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman said paramedics treated and took three people — a 53-year-old man, 29-year-old man and 32-year-old woman — to the hospital in serious condition.
2 ambulances and two tow-trucks are at the scene now…….traffic is moving verrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly
Road is now open in both directions
This park has poor visibility when exiting. When the park is full and there is no parking inside, people park outside even when parking is prohibited. The problem is that people park so close to the gates that when coming out of the park, it makes it almost impossible to see the on coming traffic until its too late. Worse when recon trucks and vans are those illegally parked.
The same thing often happens in residential Hawaii because many local drivers are not specifically instructed on what an “unimproved sidewalk” is, and why cars shouldn’t park there. To many clueless drivers it’s just an open grassy verge that makes a good parking place, nevermind that doing so forces pedestrians and the wheelchair bound to move onto the roadway and that their vehicles block sightlines required for safe access onto the main road.
Word has it a man who caused the accident was driving drunk and passing cars dangerously.
